View Full Version : Activating the new Austar/Foxtel smart cards

Has anyone succesfully activated the new smart cards in a generic Irdeto
CAM? (i.e. NOT using their supplied pay decoder box)
If it was succesful, what version of Irdeto CAM did you use and will the
smart card only work in that CAM module and not in the provider decoder box?

I think it will take a bit of trickery, as the activation process involves
placing the card into the box it came with as these 2 are already "married"?
I may be wrong, but this was the case with my 3 boxes when migrating from
the nearly defunct mds to sat in Hobart. Each card HAD to be placed in to
the box that had a matching serial (Cards/Boxs both had a serials/Barcodes
on them).
It may be all different and I may be barking up the wrong tree.....down

the new boxes and cards are married.
This will disable the 'gold' cards. As the box will ask the card for its
I.d. and it will be wrong, so an E17 error will occur.
There fore the addresses are an issue between 'gold' cards and stu's.
I would expect that the bloke down the pub that sold any goldies would not
be able to fix the issue.
The rest.......find out for your self.....(not being smart...just careful!)

The cards aren't 'married' until the CAM writes its serial number onto the
smart card during the activation process. In your case of migrating from
MDS, Austar only wanted to know the decoder serial number for asset tracking
purposes. Only the smart card serial number is needed to activate that card
for decryption. During the Foxtel/Austar new card activation process they
only ask for the smart card serial number (similar to activating an Aurora
card).
What I want to know is if an Iredto v2.06 or v2.09 CAM will correctly write
the CAM serial number to the smart card to allow activation.
The embedded conditional access software in Austar boxes is Irdeto v2.15, so
will the older version Irdeto CAMs know how to update the smart card???

I never asked anything about gold/silver cards!
I just want to know (along with anyone else with DVB-S cards in HTPC systems
that use a 2.06/2.09 Irdeto CAM) if activating the new cards in Irdeto CA
modules will be successful.
Obviously the cards WON'T work in these CAMs if they are activated and
paired in the pay tv provider supplied decoder boxes as the smart card will
only decrypt when it reads the same embedded CA serial number as was written
to the card during activation.

Actually, The tech had to tell by phone to Austar which card was in which
box before they got their hit, so, only guessing here, they were making sure
that the card that came with each box was actually in the right one before
they gave it its hit.
This had to be done by phone as the automated system didnt/couldnt handle
multi box installs.

Sponge Bob and Chuckie work fine in the nokia 9500
So I dare say they could be activated while in that decoder.
Its just the decoder is married to the certain card, the card is not married
to the certain decoder,
The same way as the sky boxes have been for years now, you can use those
cards in any decoder,
just not any card in the sky decoder. You have to call optus to have
replacement cards, "remarried"
Second point, Simmo doesn't know what he is talking about, just read his
posts.

Nothing from the decoder is written to the card, the decoder looks for the
asci serial number of the card.
Log the activation, you'll see for yourself.
As in the case of a new austar decoder, they have a barcode on the decoder
which is the same as the asci serial number of the new card.
Exactly the same as sky have been doing it for years. The advantage of the
new card is not been able to extract the HMK from it.
Really you are giving the providers too much credit, they just aren't that
smart.

Yes, I agree that this is the case. The new boxes, well the ones sent down
here at least, are sent with the card to be used for that box, and by
changing the card prior to the box/card getting the hit, will result in the
box being usless until the right card is placed in it and the hit re-sent.

The cards have no code.
They have a public key only to enable desrambling.
Good luck cracking the cards, there is nothing to crack

Has anyone succesfully activated the new smart cards in a generic Irdeto
CAM? (i.e. NOT using their supplied pay decoder box)
If it was succesful, what version of Irdeto CAM did you use and will the
smart card only work in that CAM module and not in the provider decoder box?
hi what kind of smart card reader/writer will i need to copy foxtel smart cards thanks...
