Teac vs DSE [Trio] STB

Of those who have one of these units, what do you think of them? I have
narrowed my choice down to one of these units. I'm not interested in
anything too fancy - it will be plugged in via RCA and the audio will be
going through my stereo. HD wont be available here for a long time [and i
will possibly purchase a HD Tuner Card later on down the line.

So basically i want a very simple unit and from what i can see these two
units fit the bill perfectly [and fit into a reasonable price range]

I'd recommend the Teac (DV-B300), because they've provided really good
backup support to the point of being open to suggestions from customers and
taking them on board in later firmware upgrades.

I second that, i have a teac and have been happy with it, some quirky
problems were fixed with a software update which can be done through their
web site. Don't know about the DSE but with the latest software the teac
outputs AC-3 audio if down the track the netwroks start broadcasting it in
SD.

The remote control for the DV-B300 might look a bit wonky, but it really
is nice to use for channel surfing. For remote controls I've used, it's
second only to the one Loewe ship with their televisions. That's half the
contest over right there, IMHO.

For the Teac DV-B300:

- Good channel change speed (just short of 1s I'd said - only just
quick enough to be able to watch 2 channels at once.)

- Can marked channels to be skipped.

- Can still change to skipped channels via the menu if you want.

- Can jump to next station (rather than next channel - each station
may have several channels)

- Can change aspect ratio with a single button press on the remote.

- Composite, s-video, RGB, and component output. Only one output
though which could be a problem if you wanted s-video to the tv
and composite to a vcr for example (My tv & vcr both take s-video
as their best inputs, so no problems for me with that ;)

- Good support from Teac. I upgraded the firmware to let me select
the AC-3 soundtrack when available (SD AC-3 is mostly 2-channel
only and only on some stations though.)

- No RF modulation, so have to use AV outputs (which is a *good*
thing in my books, but others may need this.)

No idea on the Trio, it wasn't available when I purchased the Teac.
someone else will have to give some details on that. No complaints
about the Teac from me.

I'm not sure what the benchmark for these things is, but i find
the DSE box quite slow. My only reference here is my UEC720 foxtel
box, which is doing a similar thing, and is much quicker.

My biggest beef with the DSE box is the lack of bass in the analogue
audio output. It's very noticable, especially on music videos and such.
This is using the analogue transmission as a benchmark.

No complaints about one of your units, except to say that it should have

What about software upgrades Trio? How and will you offer to give them?

It is all about trying to get a balance. We feel that the RF output is too low in quality to make it worthwhile to take advantage of the digital spectrum. In fact, the minimum should be S-Video.

For upgrades, we have been debugging the latest upgrade for three weeks now, which have been in development one month before that. The slowness is more due to the developers concentration on cable and satellite boxes but in any case, we are getting close to the level of stability we are happy with.

Upgrades will be offered through our web site. The full procedures will be released once the upgrade is available. We are also in discussions with our retailers to see if they are interested in providing upgrades on a store level - the units are able to be upgraded from PC to box or from box to box and so we envisage a master box being made available at the stores.

Finally, to answer a previous post as to the speed of our units, I am assuming the person was comparing our unit with a Foxtel unit, which is a cable/satellite system right? I think it is hard to compare terrestrial with the other types.

Which would be great except for the fact that there are literally millions
of TVs out there that don't accept it, and quite a lot that don't accept
composite either, hence the requests for RF.

I own an XMS007 (identical to the Trio & DSE models). Is it true that these units are made by Hyundai?

PROS:
Easy to setup.
Picks up weak signals (I am getting perfect SBS & OK 10 from a VHF signal 25km away with a UHF antenna pointing the opposite direction).
Responds quickly to channel and setup changes.

CONS:
Does not output RGB despite the manual and menus mentioning it.
Output in 4:3 mode has the picture offset to the right leaving a narrow yet visible black band on the left edge of the screen. This may not seem like an issue except that when I wish to tape a 4:3 program I like it filling the whole screen.

The specs talk of VBI Teletext. What is that? Can this box handle the full
7 Network teletext system or just closed captions?
