I'm on Foxtel Sat and had a call from them, wanting to change me to a new
box, new remote control etc. this week. The caller couldn't or didn't want
to tell me much about the pros and cons, so I'm unsure about the reason for
them to upgrade their hardware. Can anyone enlighten me on this ? Are they
preparing for interactivity, study my viewing preferences and then blast me
with personalised ads on those channels ? I've just about had enough ads as
it is.
What else is new with these new units ?

Thanks for any info

H.N.

chances are you have an old box and need to be upgraded to allow for new
services and new technology, the software upgrades over the weekend were for
slightly newer boxes that only needed a firmware upgrade to handle the new
features.

in short it's good unless you have a goldie in use as these will become
useless until someone comes up with a way to crack the new encryption

I've just been browsing the net for some info, thanks.
It's all about interactive services, including personalised advertising on
the feedback of your constantly monitored preferences and habits. I just
wonder now, how they'll punish those subscribers who opt NOT to hook up to
ITV, but just want to watch their channels.

I have a legitemate excuse, my phone line is at the other end of the house,
if they want me to hook up my STB to the phone line then they can pay for
the installation of the extra phone point and then they will be billed for
the calls the device makes and if it runs on DSL then they are in trouble
coz i already have it....

Ever thought that FOXTEL may opt for a wireless modem and maybe give you a
free cordless handset. Why whinge.

....and if you just want channels, stop worrying and stop stuffing around
with your decoder.

They can cough up some dosh for using your DSL to send the info
back....

Poor suckers on BPA ADSL/Cable paying their precious CAP to allow
Foxtel to target them with ads.
