I am sure this newbie question has been asked a hundred times, but please
one more time for the dummies.

1) Will a SD STB do anything for my picture quality if my Sydney free to air
TV signal is delivered by Foxtel cable?
2) Is Foxtel delivered in digital and the foxtel box decodes the signal to
analogue and as such I do not require a digital STB?

Thanks

You can only connect a Digital STB to a broadcast digital signal (which is
transmitted at a different frequency to analogue TV). You cannot connect it
to the output of a Foxtel box.

No

IIRC Foxtel use analog demodulators to acquire FTA channels and then
remodulate them on the terestrial service. This mean that the quality
depends on 2 things, Foxtels'reception of FTA and what the deteriation
of the signal happen between you and Foxtel (on the terestrial network).

No, Foxtel is analog on terestrial service and digital on satelite.
You'll require a STB if you wish to get 16:9. That being said Foxtel
will eventually be upgrading the terestrial service to digital, though
there is no indication that the FTA will be continued and if they are,
what compression Foxtel may apply to them.

I wasn't aware that Foxtel was available terrestrially. Maybe you mean
over cable?
