Satellite TV providers fight pirates

first half of next year. All subscribers will eventually get a new digital
set-top box allowing them to view more than 100 digital channels.

Foxtel - jointly owned by Telstra, News Corp, and Publishing and
Broadcasting Ltd - will also enable viewers to interact with the television
station via their telephone line.

The digital roll-out faces a major hurdle in winning approval from the
Australian Competition and Consumer Commission on third party-access issues.

But let us hope, too, that this crackdown corresponds a more value for money service for legitimate cable/satellite TV users. Otherwise the millions of dollars they say they lose to piracy won't be recouped. People will just stop subscribing.

Bullshit, If that was the case they would not force users to use the Foxtel
box and pay an installation fee for something they already own.
If they were serious about this they would just be charging the postage
cost of sending out a legit smartcard, then your normal subs fee less a
discount for not renting a Foxtel STB from that point on.

The encryption is damn good that paying customers can't receive content with
the new whizbang cards.

Got mine in the mail today telling me to switch cards within the next 7 days
to maintain service. Can't get jack with the new card!

Of course ringing FoxTel gets you a recording saying they can't take your
call due to unusually high call volumes.

Its called milking the cow, and Foxtel have always done that to its max
advantage. Foxtel needs to get real with this along with giving
customers a lot more flexibility in choosing programing options.

Opinions are always going to vary on the amount and what is considered
good value. I do know that people are certainly not going to take on a
big monthly repayment just to watch what Foxtel offers.
