....Foxtel spokesman Mark Furness said the new smartcards were "pirate-proof
technology" and would quickly render all imitations useless.

"This technology has not been cracked by pirates in three years of use in
other markets around the world," he said.

"What we want to do is encourage people who have pirate services to contact
us and legitimise their services."

The anti-piracy technology is the first phase in Foxtel's estimated $550
million roll-out of digital television services, due for completion in the
first half of next year. All subscribers will eventually get a new digital
set-top box allowing them to view more than 100 digital channels.

Foxtel - jointly owned by Telstra, News Corp, and Publishing and
Broadcasting Ltd - will also enable viewers to interact with the television
station via their telephone line.

The digital roll-out faces a major hurdle in winning approval from the
Australian Competition and Consumer Commission on third party-access issues.

Bullshit, If that was the case they would not force users to use the Foxtel
box and pay an installation fee for something they already own.
If they were serious about this they would just be charging the postage
cost of sending out a legit smartcard, then your normal subs fee less a
discount for not renting a Foxtel STB from that point on.

Actually, the real way to do it, would be if the pay providers where to sell
Smartcards ONLY,, the same way as you obtain a Phone card. In that way,
you call into your local newsagency, buy a card with the channels you want,
on it. The fee charged would only cover the channels you anted, then at
the end of a month, the card would switch off, and you buy another card...
Won't work scream the pay providers.. Firstly in works in European
countries
and has done for many years, Just check in some of the European satellite
magazines,, They show pages and pages of legal program cards, secondly,,
the pay providers could increase there subscription platform , by 60000
subscribers, for the price of a card, by allowing Aurora subscribers to
use there own receivers on the pay platform .

I agree,
But then they would'nt make any money and they'd also know you would have to
do something
with your existing installation,
like try to sell it with no way of recouping the original purchase price,
so they're trying to shaft the pirate users.

I agree to the extent of logic no idea what the equipment has to do with
this..Pay TV operators use equipemnt like plastic bags, its part of the
service..all this shit about support calls is all just brain wash.

Sell one orange or sell a bag full.

we make more money from one orange than we do from the same one orange
in a bag full of them, however by selling the bag full not only do we
have the chance of getting the customer back we also have the
opportunity of moving more oranges at one time before they go mouldy or
go out of fashion, once the customers have commited to spending that bit
extra and getting that bag of oranges its their problem as to how to use
them after all they have subscribed to them self to eat a hole bage of
oranges for that bit extra
So whats in it for the Orange seller, increased capital, more capacity and
less overhead or stock that can go bad and a larger name in the house
for advertising...remember you bought the orange you have to eat it or
its goes to waste, you might even get to like oranges when you get used
to them.

So, when you go to Safeway to buy a bag of oranges, you would prefer to buy
the entire box instead of just a kilogram which is all you would require for
the month ?
That sick puppy Bassett spoke of a great idea where you purchase a monthly
card with only the channels you want to watch

This could work for basic services, but makes it hard to implement the
interactive stuff when everyone uses on Korean noname decoder. At least
with SkyDigital in the UK you can buy your equipment, even if you must use a
SkyDigital Receiver.

The encryption is damn good that paying customers can't receive content with
the new whizbang cards.

Got mine in the mail today telling me to switch cards within the next 7 days
to maintain service. Can't get jack with the new card!

Of course ringing FoxTel gets you a recording saying they can't take your
call due to unusually high call volumes.

What a joke!

Its called milking the cow, and Foxtel have always done that to its max
advantage. Foxtel needs to get real with this along with giving
customers a lot more flexibility in choosing programing options.

Yes this is a great idea, and I would move to make it happen, however
selling monthly prepaid is like selling one orange
My point was audience, the type of audience that the byes one orange is
alot differnt to the one that makes the decision of a bag full.

One orange byers are normally tourist and passers by and will likey
never return for purchase,so therfore this trade is virually less than
10% of the market at the maximum in prime position even.

Its obvious that commitment to the channel line up over 12 months is
going to make more maney than the touist who byes a card for 2 months
even at a bit extra cost and then decides not to worry about payTV any
longer as they can't afford it.

I know nothing of the PayTV giants activities for Business decisions
however I know allot about business practises,I am just pointing my veiw
of why the Paytv opperators possibly act as they do in Australia.
After all we don't have much selection,I can see many here with my
oranges allready by selling 20kg only, not 1kg bags as formentioned.

Barney

If Foxtel etc was a fair deal, i.e. flat rate for all channels and not as expensive as it currently is, I don't think piracy would be as great a problem and most people would happily sign up legitimately. Pay TV providers may even find they would maintain their profit margins due to the larger number of subscribers for the lesser rate. My network of friends and I all agree it is nothing but a rip off to pay current rates AND have to pay extra for movie channels etc. If I could get all channels for a flat rate of say, $60 a month, I would be more than happy

Byron John Forbes

I disagree. I think it should just be the works for $30 - $40 per month.
Anything over $40 and I say lets go see the pirate! :)

That would be an excellent plan Bassett, $79 a month just to watch FOX8 on
austar
is far too expensive.
