Hi all, I have been looking at upgrading / purchasing some power amps.
I have a ME-75B power amp for my front speakers already (for music and
HT), now i am looking at getting some power amps for my center channel
plus my surrounds and (later on for rears as well), i was looking at
continuing the thread of having ME power amps and try to find a few ME
2ch power amps (probably the ME-550s) for my center and surrounds or
was considering purchasing a Elektra 6ch for that area. In general
people seem to inform me that ME is better quality / a better product
than Elektra but i have also been informed in the HT area i probably
wont be able to tell much if any difference. Since i am already using
an ME for my fronts in regards to music i should be fine, i am only
know really looking at the HT part of my setup. I am currently using a
Onkyo TX-SV919THX as my receiver / preamp and the ME-75 is connected
to that. Now the onkyo doesnt have support for more than 5.1 but i am
planning on purchasing a Rotel preamp soonish which does hence why i
have to consider the fact that i will need a few 2 channel power amps
or one 6ch power amp.

Basically i can buy one Elektra which may not be as good sound quality
or build or 2-3 ME 2ch power amps which may be better sound quality
and build of course the ultimate question is can i notice that
difference in the HT section? Again i remind you i wont be using the
Elektra for Music / front speakers. I know some people might say the
best is to have 2 separate systems one system just for music and one
just for HT but i cant quite do that at the moment or may never be
able to space wise and cash wise. I would like to get everyone's
opinion on the 2 brands i am currently looking at and to hear their
opinions on whether i can tell a difference between the 2 in HT.
Actually perhaps another point i should make is i am probably going to
be purchasing them 2nd hand if that makes any difference, i cant
afford them brand new as is.

Anyone know how easy it is to get an Elektra serviced / repaired in
Sydney? i know the MEs can be done in sydney but since the Elektra is
manufactured in Melbourne i wasnt sure if i have to send it all the
way down there if i encounter any issues / problems.

My current speaker setups are the Accusound Phase Ones (fronts) ,
Subsonic PC-1 (center), 1 Jensen (used to be my center) and a couple
of Sony bookshelves as rears / surrounds (one of the Sony's aint
connected cos my onkyo only does 5.1) and a Audioline Subwoofer. I am
looking at purchasing some 2nd hand fronts and moving my accusounds to
my rears. for the Fronts i was looking at some Equinox Perigees or
some Thiels CS3.5s and any other decent 2nd hand speaker i can come
across.

Any advice and help would be much appreciated.

IMHO you will be able to tell the difference between say an me-555 and an
elektra 6ch, but only if your onkyo isn't the limiting factor...if it is
just sell it and get a 7ch receiver (if you really want more channels!), and
(say) an ME14 preamp. This should be cheaper than your plan of buying a
rotel HT pre and several power amps, and give you a better exp all round.

Maybe you should look at upgrading the speakers rateher than spending too
much money on the amplification and preamp just to run them with Sony
bookshelves !?
Your Onkyo is a decent machine ... give it a decent speaker set and you'll
more than notice the difference.

Agreed, your speaker simply will not do justice to the
amps you are buying, get better speakers and spend
rest of your money on a receiver such as Pioneer 2011
which was available for $1700 at Hi-Fi supermaket and
matching with your existing power amp and should do
quite well with your current speaker.

I think the Onk will be a limiting factor.
That AVR is ancient, the very first THX approved AVR from ~1996 (?).
It has 5.1 analog input but no onboard DD/DTS.

Retirement time ;)

Curious, why would you say that??
I have one and it is fantastic, and yes I have demoed all the others such as
Rotel etc but in my opinion the Elektra
sounded the best. I am using a Yamaha RXV1200 as a preamp. Mine also has
the upgraded power supplies too which I beleieved was a problem with earlier
models (and for which they did get a caning!)
Regards,
Chris
