Well they were region 4 I guess .... but that would be better than region 1
anyway (better resolution).

Absolutely not.

Sopranos Season 1 R1: 16:9 / DD5.1
Sopranos Season 1 R4: 4:3 / DD2.0

Sopranos Season 2 R1: 16:9 / DD5.1
Sopranos Season 2 R4: 16:9 / DD2.0 [for the first handful of episodes]; DD5.1

As far as I know, only S3 are similar but even then the R1 has better menu's and box presentation.

Hi Chops,
Something that is really big in the US at the moment is a lot of new release DVDs are now
in both formats,
i.e. Widescreen and FULL Screen, it seems most people are now fed up with having the Black
bars on the top and bottom of their Screens, so the American Video companies are now
releasing Movies in Both formats,
Widescreen and FULL screen.
I think we will see the same happening here in the not to distant future..
But apart from that NTSC DVDs are less quality than a PAL DVD, The PAL format has a higher
scan rate.

Rubbish. Judge each disc on its merits. PAL isn't always better and
besides it has a lower refresh rate than NTSC. If you want to order 'The
Sopranos' and miss out on a good chunk of the picture, then by all means
order the 4:3 version. It certainly isn't 'fullscreen' on mine and it won't
be in a few years on most.

Just because it was filmed 16:9 doesn't mean it was framed 16:9. Just
ask Joss Wheadon about Buffy and why Seasons 4 and on are in 4:3 on R1
but 16:9 in R2/4.
