That is kewl news, competition can only be a good thing, lets hope it really
is competitive. Unfortunately the whole press release is fairly lacking in
any details at all and seems to make fairly bold predictions based on a
camera that won't even go on sale till Feb 2004 at the earliest.

* "The new model WILL offer an exclusive selection of new features and
exciting Nikon SLR technology that WILL surpass products within the
evolving digital SLR market"

A market that will continue to evolve in the 3+ months leading up to the
sale of the D70. The competition won't be standing still :-). Fuji?,
Sigma?, Olympus?, Canon? *gasp* Minolta-Konica?

The cynic in me read the whole release as a plea to entry level/mum n' dad
photographers not to jump ship cos they'll get to use their lenses with an
affordable dSLR soon.

Lots of promises, hope it meets the hype.

it would be nice, however, to see nikon leading the market instead of
continuing to play catchup to canon. eg their last 3 models: D100 response
to D30/D60, D2H response (with 2.5 year delay !) to 1D, and D70 response to
300D.

eg. wireless in the D2H is great, now canon will have to match or beat that-
although there are strong pointers (eg paul pope) that the imminent 1D
replacement (due in feb??) is pretty mindblowing stuff- way beyond the
1D/D2h. hopefully this incldues wi-fi

Wow .. YET ANOTHER Canon coming out? *yawn* .. you know if they got it
right, they wouldn't need to release a new model every few months.

weird or interesting how nikon is SO opposite from canon in announcing new
cameras. the eos 300D was *top secret* till the day of the official
announcement. nikon announce the development and future official
announcements of a new camera :)

I'd say Ken hit the nail on the head... I bet that sales of D100's has
just about stopped sind the 300D and that Nikon had nothing in the
pipeline for the consumer level.

Nikon must be hurting right about now! I hope they pick themselves up
off the ground, because we need *some* competition in the DSLR sector!
(And I say that as a confirmed Canon user).

Look at Kodak! From a huge company selling film, to a company not
doing terribly well in the digital realm. Sure, they have the digital
backs (I'm not even getting into the 14n DSLR!), but most people bag
them for noisy images.

Look at what happened to Polaroid! You have to be in the digital race,
or you lose! Nikon is still in the race, but I'll bet you they'd like
to be in a much stronger position... They're picking themselves off
the ground at the moment, and Canon are going to sink the booot in
their ribs again with a new relase at PMA next February! These are not
good times for Nikon...

I hope you don't forget the 2 years it took Canon to respond to original D1.

The D100 covers the D30, D60 and the 10D....And still does!

oh yeah - we all ditched our nikkor lense investment & ran over to the
competition - even tho the D100 is a very capable camera. you canon

Well, yes and no. the D100 is still selling, is still very capable,
and the company's probably making more money from it than canon do
from their continual evolution (evolution may be the wrong word!).

One could suggest that nikon get it right up front and have camers in
the market for a longer period, whereas canon keep reinventing
themselves because there's room for improvement. ;o)

and that company is now not pursuing any R&D into consumer film, and
instead focusing entirely on digital - both camera & printing.

I don't think Nikon are out of the game yet, or on the floor being
kicked. The D100 has been very profitable for them, and in this neck
of the woods 2 out of 3 pro dslr's seem to be nikon. I know of 5
D100's bought just last week, despite the numerous Canon offerings.

I mean really, if you don't like your current Canon dSLR, just wait a
few weeks and a new one will be out.

That'd piss me off a tad, making an investment to be gazumped before
I'd had a chance to regret not getting a Nikon ;o)

hrmm.. that'll do for this morning - I'm off to shoot some cows (with
the Nikon of course!)

I'd say both camps need to get a grip, as the I feel there is an underlying
"emotional" attachment to one's preferred weapon being displayed within this
group.

Shoot Canon... shoot Nikon..... who gives a rats!! Why not just all hold
hands and be photographers and get along.....

What? and miss the opportunity for another Canon v Nikon thing .... that
has prompted at least one person from within this newsgroup to send my hubby
a very nasty canon great, nikon sux email :D

What neck of the woods are you from? It depends what area of professional
photography, but the vast majority of sports photographers use Canons.

I see this as a benefit more than anything. If you bought the D60 2 years
ago and the 10D came out shortly after, you'd still have a D60 and you'd
have the chance to upgrade. If you bought the Nikon D100, for 2 years you'd
have absolutely no real upgrade path at all (except to $10k pro DSLRs). That
would piss me off more than having the option of upgrade.

Canon are pushing the development envelope and getting their products to
market fast.. and at the right price. Even if the Canon camera I buy is
shortly replaced, chances are it is going to be replaced by an incremental
upgrade model, not something that makes my camera redundant. Anyone who gets
pissed off by regular development needs to think about why they're buying a
camera - for the latest whiz-bang gizmo or to take photos?

How do you justify that? When we bought our D100 (recently) there were
almost none in Australia at all. I think that would indicate that the 300D
has little impact on the D100 sales at all, particularly as the 300D is
targetted at a different audience.

The 300D is targetted at those who would most likely have purchased a non
SLR digital ...
