I've uploaded about 50 photos, maybe more in the past few years, but
most of them in the last few weeks. I think I have some great shots,
but airliners.net judges dont seem to think so. A fellow photographer
uploads 20-50 shots a week, and have most of them accepted.
Is it because I'm new? Because I've had so many rejects?

Your images are too big for me to look at them all on my slow 28.8, but the
few I did see are all on the ground..... could it be that they get lots of
"static" shots and are looking for something a little different? What kind
of pics does your mate submit?

They look pretty good to me, but the only true comparison would be to
see them alongside the ones John West didn't reject.

His best bet is to give up and go to jetphotos.net, airliners.net is pretty
much a "mates club".

a.net has many rules/regs about uploading but it really comes down to the
opinion of the screener as to whether it is rejected or not and I remain
unconvinced that people are treated equally. I was involved in the
screening process at airliners.net for over 2 years (from the sidelines) and
there is nothing fair and equitable about the process at all.
But if you look at the names of the big uploaders, you will see that
(surprise surprise), they're all screeners or mates of screeners ....

Just curious - what's your camera and equipment set up - some of the photos

Thanks for the compliment.
I'm using a Canon 300D, with a 18-55mm and a 90-300mm canon lenses.
I use the Large/Fine setting for all aviation photos, and mostly
100ISO.

The majority of those photos look great to me. The photo of the Emirates
777 touching down is my favourite of the bunch.
If we're being pedantic, I can come up with a couple of points. In the Air
Mauritius 767, there seems to be a bit of window reflection, especially on
the right near the aerobridge. In N724CL_2_IMG_0819.jpg, the tip of the
tail is cut off which I think detracts slightly from the image. The
airliners.net FAQ says that they reject photos of parts of aircraft anyway.
So that's 2 from 12, but it doesn't explain why the rest would be rejected.
I can't see any problems with them.

Just when i am about to give up on them, they accept more photos LOL
Yes, the Mauritius 767 had glare, thats cool. I can accept that.
Maybe I was wrong about a.net
Do you think that if i change my non-usm lens to a USM 90-300mm lens,
it'll make any difference?
What about using sports mode on my 300D?
I normally just use P mode.

What is this airliners.net? Are they a stock agent or just an enthusiast
site? If it's just an entusiast site, then I think it's picky. If it
stock, then I think it matters... this is what I have to say about the
pics. Remember, you asked for possible reasons that they were rejected,
so dont get angry if you think i'm nit-picking.
If I was asked to criticise them then I'd have to say mostly their
compsition is not quite right. It's like the head/feet thing for
portraits. You cant chop 'em off! so if you're shooting a whole plane,
dont chop off it's nose or the tip of it's tail or it's wing tips. This
is the problem I noticed most often in these shots. Some of them also
have the bulk of the plane on one side of the shot.
Also a few of them have too much 'ground' and other unfilled areas. They
could do with a bit of cropping to make the subject fill the frame more.
Several of them have marks that need to be 'healed' in photoshop that
are probably caused by dust flecks on the sensor (diffuse circular blobs
that are sometimes slightly darker around the outside)
Some of them might be rejected because they feature things like barbed
wire in the same shot. This would only matter if it's a stock shot - the
barbed wire would need to be 'saying something' if it was there in the
same shot as a jumbo. If they're not selling them as stock, then I dont
see it as a problem.
A couple of them seem to have window reflections in them. I assume they
were taken from behind glass. If this is the case, then you can avoid it
by using a hood and pressing the hood against the glass. Otherwise, make
a makeshift hood out of a jumper or something like that.
If they're pressed for space, or they get hundreds of entries a day,
then they will be more fussy - yours might be great shots, but others
might be fantastic. I havent looked at the competition. Try submitting
some images to Getty or Corbis - they'll probably tell you to go away
without even opening the files.
Lastly, they might mistake a few things - i.e. if they think the heat
haze is out of focus rather than heat haze, which was mentioned elsewhere.
Ok, that's it. (:
Scott.

I would definitely say compose them more carefully. All those ones you
have accepted are composed much better than the ones that were rejected.
Also avoid complicating the scene with lots of distracting objects -
given that you cant take the planes out of their environment or move
them, then often you're not going to be able to avoid it. For example,
you have a shot from before that has a stack of buildings, aerials or
some other kinds of poles sticking up behind the plane.

What's the purpose of it though? Do they sell the pics or just provide a
place for you to keep them? Seems like it would be better to use
photo.net if it's just a place to keep your pics, and better to find an
agent like Alamy if they sell the pics as stock.

I only looked at this first one (time! time!) and though you've had lots of
replies here's my take on it:
Obviously taken from behind glass. To avoid reflections get as close to the
glass as you can. It's also helpful to cut off camera reflections by using
a large rubber lens hood, or a black cloth. Even better still get outside
if you can. I realise this many not be possible at most large airports
these days.
The image is too large to view in 1024x768 screen mode. Check what
airliners.net requires for submissions as it could be that they expect
something more suitable for www publishing.
The starboard wing is cut off. It depends on how fussy they are about such
things, but I'd call that a biggy.
The background is pretty busy. While there might not be much you can do
about it in this case, maybe they like the aircraft to be more interesting
than the background. :-)
The photo is underexposed; there's no detail in the shadows and things like
the detail of the front tyre are lost against the dark painted concrete. I
know it's basically a white object in full sun, but you might be able to
make better use of the latitude/dynamic range. This is one of those cases
were trusting full auto mode can trip you up. If you have a white object
taking up a large proportion of the frame it could cause -2 stops error in
exposure. In this case it might be a -1 stop error.
My last point is the way the view of the aircraft looks foreshortened by the
angle and the lens. Again it depends on how fussy they are about such
things.
Hope this gives you a few ideas?
Regards,
Chris.
