after a recent trip to NYC I was able to watch DirecTV and i loved it, it was amazing. The amount of choice was unimaginable compared to the crap we have to put up with on Australian pay tv, while there was of course alot of shit, isn't that all part of the experience? well I loved it. Hopefully Foxtel will be somewhat similar to DirecTV when it goes digital. dont ya reckon?

No because Foxtel put all these ridiculous conditions on channels to
get shown on the Foxtel network. Foxtel practically demand
distribution rights, and a load of other ridiculous channels which is
why some channels like Adventure 1, Odyessey, Expo and others are only
on Optus.

I think we all agree with you totally...but with the absence of competition,
and strict regulatio of our airwaves, there no chance of us having anything
more than a sub-standard pay tv option.
To be honest, if technologies such as broadcasts over the internet come to
fruiition, thats where we may get some options...though I think it will be
many years to come.
Cheers

Not to mention the crap shown on free-to-air tv in Australia !!!!!
There are only three commercial tv channel choices in Sydney,
Melbounre and the other capitol cities when there should be at least
half a dozen.....
How can we explain this embarrassing and humiliating situation to
visiting Americans who would expect a city the size of Sydney, for
example, a city with a population over 4 million, that we have such a
pitifully lousy abysmal pathetic choice of tv channels in this country
?!?

Having more FTA channels won't give you better choice.
It's the content that needs fixing, besides Australia doesn't have the
population for another FTA commercial station.

Easy. There is no market for a large amount of TV channels. Compare the
population size of New York to Sydney and you have your answer. It's not
commercially viable and would fragment the market too much.
Thanks

P.S. That doesn't mean I like it.

Rubbish. You cannot prove the viability or otherwise of something
unless there is a free market.
And why would it fragment the market "too much". Too much for whom?
The uncompetitive existing TV channels with their over-priced advertising
rates?
Who gives a **** about visiting Americans?

There is a free market. No-one is stopping a new entry into pay
television here.

Tell them to go outside and enjoy the sunshine and stop worrying about
rotting their brains in front of a television set. Why, do you think
they visit for HBO?

Yes. Exactly them. Their market will become too fragmented meaning that
there are too few customers per advertiser. If cross media ownership laws
were relaxed there'd be more channels, but less diversity in the news. I'm
happy putting up with fewer channels if it means what gets reported on TV
and what gets reported in the paper opposes each other enough for me to go
out and find out more by myself!
Thanks

No there shouldn't. Three commercial channels is *more* than
enough.
I think Mr Springsteen put it best when he said "57 channels
and nothing on".
As other posters have suggested, more channels does not equal
more watchable content. I think that Sydney's "Channel 31" is
all the example we need, in that regard!

I live right under the (departure) flight path known in
the business as the "Sydney One Departure". It's a bit of
a limited-access path, the politicians don't like anyone
using it unless they're way to heavy to maintain the 5 degree
climb ratio required for all the other Sydney departures.
Consequently, only two United Airlines flights and two Qantas
Airways flights use that route each day. (One of each to Los
Angeles, and one of each to San Francisco).
Nothing warms the heart quite like the sight of another
aeroplane-load of Americans going home, and I get to see
four of them every day! :-)

talking about PAY tv.

Good idea.
A Sci-Fi channel ... So we non-sci-fi people don't have OUR shows cancelled
for yet another sci-fi marathon on tv1.
I hate sci-fi ... You're entitled to your opinion and I'm entitled to mine.
I'm not getting into a "sci-fi sucks / is good" etc fight - my point is that
there IS a market for it, so why cancel other's shows to show them SO often
(almost every 3rd weekend!).
