I called a place called ' VideoPro' today to enquire about buying a screen
for a friend.

I told them i was looking for a 92 to 96 inch manual pulldown 16:9 high
contrast (grey) screen, I was thinking of brands like Daylite and Draper
both US brands who seem to be well regarded and reasonably priced example.
i paid $650 locally for a new 106inch 16:9 Draper Luma manual pulldown
early last year , anyway this guy at 'videopro' tells me they dont carry
those brands but that they can sell me a screen for $5000 ( yes thousand
$!) I said , 'i already had the projector and just needed the screen'. He
said,' yes i know' and went on to tell me they had a 'cheaper' screen they
could sell me for $3000 . I asked him the brands he said 'ScreenTechnics'
was one, i dont remeber the other. I told him about the Draper and Daylight
pull down screens and how much i paid for one previously but he wasnt very
interested and seemed a bit snooty too.
At this point i just started to laugh and ended the call.
Business must be good i guess.

VideoPro's service is very patchy, to say the least. I bought an
amp/DVD player/subwoofer from them some time ago and was delighted
with both the price and the service. I've bought a few other smaller
bits and pieces and had very good service then too. At other times
though, I've been treated worse than the muck you'd scrape off your
shoe, even though I was a serious shopper with cash in my pocket ready
to buy.

I've also bought a few items for my place of employment, and again
received very patchy service. Sometimes it's great, other times it
has been so poor that I wonder if I'm talking to the same company. My
guess is that they are a company that needs to incorporate a bit of
corporate culture - train their staff in what customer service is all
about, and chuck out the ones who are no good at it. They've got some
good people, and some complete duds.

I've had nothing but excellent service from them at the Macgregor store
since they first opened 2-3 yrs ago.
I bought a $1400~ sub from them that was playing up, they swapped it over no
questions asked, same with a thomson STB.

I went there today, service was good, and boy did they want the sale. (I got numerous phone calls asking what they could do to make the sale). But unfortunately for them the guys at JB Hifi weren't asking me what they could do, they were telling me what they were going to do. Lets just say that I prefer to buy off someone who adds value to a package not just because you got a cheaper price somewhere else. (It would have seriously gone on all day and I was sick and tired of going from shop to shop in 36 degree heat to hear the latest set of speakers that one was going to upgrade me to..)

They do seem to stick (as do most places) to the brands that they import themselves, as they get a much better margin to play with.

Service is good at Videopro, but they build it into their prices ;)

lots of screens on sale on ebay all the time.
one guy actually sells "morgan" & "da-lite" screens from his brisbane home
at much more reasonable prices (below $1000).
you can find them in the projectors section.

hope this helps...
