linux will sell itself. No need to install it, even. Download the live
distro puppy linux and burn it to CDR, data, multisession. Then boot the
CDR. This is a full-featured OS that runs from a CD. You can install it to
a hard drive also, if you want. -Dave

I agree it's the wrong group and that Google groupers are mostly
clueless, but. Unless you know how to filter out Google Groups
groups when searching the archive, won't be long until Google
users/spammers flood the archive to the point that you can't find
useful information and definitely can't find an appropriate USENET
group by searching the archive.

This is not a good group for your question, but Google is trashing
the archive so badly that finding an appropriate group by searching
the archive is becoming more and more difficult.
One of the first things Google did to the public USENET archive was
to remove the search's most relevant groups listing. That was a long
time ago and it made finding an appropriate group more difficult.
More recently, the number of garbage custom Google Groups has
increased to the point that some searches return the garbage groups
before any proper USENET groups.
This USENET part of the Internet is not like the rest. Google is
creating some serious resentment here.
Google users who appreciate USENET should look for a different
USENET server.

How do you know how many dodgy copies of XP are installed? Roughly?
Within a few million one way or the other?

if you are doing it to learn something
if you need linux features
if you have a reason to no longer use windows
if you want to be more than a "simple" user
if you can dual boot
if you want to get more from your ancient hardware
if you need a linux app
actually, I only proselytize for AmigaOS but as there is no hardware
available at this time for rank newbies I am refraining from doing so.
i've found recently that ubuntu is ftw compared to anything else a
couple of years ago. start there. dual boot for sure.
i run windows and linux on their own quads and my Amiga is 800MHz
ppc. Now i have three responsive machines
