My Mr. Pink arrived today. Was incredibly quick to tear it open (the plastic wrapping - that is!) and give it a burl.
Firstly, I had only seen this film once (about 3-4 years ago - back when my film tastes included Scream:eek: ) and I remember not particularly liking it. However, over time as you read up on films, you feel like they deserve a second chance. As for Reservoir Dogs, being early (if not first?) Tarantino had to merit a second viewing. And what better than to do so with the newly released Artisan Special Edition 2 Disc Set :D
I chose Mr. Pink because I had no recollection of the film itself (except for the ending- how could you forget that!). When I saw Buscemi's goofy face I knew that's the version I wanted. However, I'm tossing up whether to knock this one off (along with the Mr. Brown's I ordered from Amazon) and get a Mr. Blonde, as he was easily the coolest!
Okay, B/s aside, as for the DVD itself, let me just say that I saw no real problems on my w/s TV, and that those people screaming blasphomy at the transfer for whatever reasons are just wankers. Plain and simple. Sometimes people complain for the sake of complaining. Sure, the quality is not great by any means, but have people stopped and thought "Hey, maybe that's the best they could do?!". I mean, the budget was $900,000!!! Get off the dickhead bandwagon and just appreciate the film. Geez.
I can't comment on the sound as I'm using the TV speakers only (hey - I had to choose between video or audio. I made my decision and I stand by it.). However, I'm sure one of the Audiophiles here will let us know soon enough (Eric B and Matt Evans come to mind).
As for the film itself, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Specifically? ALL OF IT. Lol. From the very first scene of Tarantino's breakdown of 'Like A Virgin' to the ************ (no going to spoil!), I was engrossed. However, as most will agree; a high point is definately Mr. Blonde's dancing to Stuck In The Middle With You and his Razorblade Antics.
Okay, ranting aside. If you're still reading, then congrats; you officially have more time on your hands than I do. Now I'm going back to what I do best - serving as the "Official" Forum Menace

I cant wait to get this release. Im thinking of maybe Mr. Orange cover. Whilst Buscemi is a legend, the picture isnt quite right.
And yes stuck in the middle with you is the best part of the film. Had to buy the soundtrack just for the song,

I had the barebones edition and from most accounts it was a better transfer. That was what the main issue was all about.
I'll be getting Reservoir Dogs along with Pulp Fiction and True Romance. Don't care much for Jackie Brown, the region 4 is suffice.
Great mini-review anyhow Macabre :)
BTW, this was the one movie that opened the doors to independent cinema and film-making for me. And for the record, I still rate this ahead of Pulp Fiction as his best work.

I do these for the fun of it.
On the suject of reviewing, I don't think a 5.1 setup should be mandatory for a reviewer.
I'm thinking of whether or not to do a thread on April Fool's Day as that had a great 2.35:1 'scope' transfer (the first time it has been released in it's correct Aspect Ratio) which looked good on my TV, but I don't think many people would be interested.

Off topic for a 2nd I think the 5.1 setup is needed to review a 5.1 movie. I dont think a widescreen TV is required because we can all view it in anamorphic and letterbox, but sure it helps.
Yeah Ill be getting the Pulp Fiction new release aswell. Jackie Brown isnt as important to me, and neither is True Romance.

I've ordered *all* of these titles. Really went off the handle. These past few months have seen the release of about 12 - 15 R1's I've been long awaiting.
The finances have taken a battering!

I saw Reservoir Dogs the first Saturday it was released in Melbourne at the Kino Cinema 9.00pm session. I remember this so well for about 20-30 people just got up & left during 'ear' scene
I have the other Artisan release of this movie brought it for $9.99 on honeymoon in the states @ blockbuster. Dont know whether I will get the new edition will wait and see.
I thought the movie was great when I first saw it and is good on repeat viewing.....as for Dts why bother as Mac stated it was done on a shoestring in a wharehouse so I cant see it being much of a difference but what the heck will most likely buy & give it a go.
Michael Madsen lines where the best I thought......Are you going to bark all day little dog......
Along with Chris Penn.......they have pumped some much black semen up your arse it is coming out of your mouth.......what a line & scene

Definitely Chris Penn's best performance.
Such an awesome cast. Like who have we got Penn, Lawrence Tierney, Steve Buscemi, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, and of course Mr. Keitel. Throw in Tarantino and fark what a film. I'm itching for this DVD now...

Anyone who hasn't done so yet, check out the Tribute To Laurence Tierney on Disc 2 (Fullscreen).
It's very funny; as it seems Laurence was quite a pain in the ass to work with.

Hi Gang,
It's nice to see all the worms finally come out of the woodwork to respond to...... Gothmac's..... review.
If there's one thing I enjoy more than anything else it's,,,Sardonic Sarcasim,,,, and that's what... Tarantino..... is all about, you don't need a lot of money to make a superb film such as this, just look at the characters that were assembled for this litty ditty.
No they were not out of work Actors as some cynics out there may assume, they were if fact people who stuck by their principles and contributed to what they believed in and that was: Cultism as black as black as it can be.
When you go to the movies you want to be entertained and stir that stagnant grey matter contained between your ears, you should leave that place of viewing still pondering the twists and turns contained within the story line even days after the viewing.
Anyone can dish up a banal tripe mix if your stupid enough to watch it.
Reviewing of film genre these days seems to rely on the old tired formula just to please and reciprocate in the bum sucking stakes, that's not what film making is all about or reviewing for that matter.
MrMac's reviewing has hit that button for me and could teach some of those so called sycophantic reviewers a lesson in cultism etiquette.
His comment about sound is spot on,as not all surround mix's are that good, but if done so correctly can be resplendent and compliment the film in a positive way.
There will always be wankers in this world who I avoid like the plague.
Tim Roth's performance was superb as I have never seen an individual bleed so much and still raise a H/G to dispose of you know who( Mr.Finally we are alone at last)...
Congrats Macgoth keep those reviews coming as we have a nice little bands of Screwball's including myself who all have at least not forgotten that phrase defined as.... Visionary Imagination... contained within our brains.
Diatribe completed.

Hi Macgod:D ,
It was the least I could do as I am very passionate about my films and all they contain, especially when reviewed by someone who actually has a ...Brain...and not proport to possess one as most people in the film industry do!!!.
I'm sure you have also watched...Dusk Til Dawn..who has not!!!.
At last I see that you have finally approved of my spacing ,Heheeeeee;)

Hey Markow,
I definately have no problem with your spacing when you are commending me :p hehe.
As for From Dusk Till Dawn, I was a fan of that ever since I saw a butchered TV version of it late night on Channel 7.
In fact, whilst I now have the R1 2 DVD set, I would love a copy of that TV version as the cuts they made were laughable.
NOTE TO CHANNEL 7: Trying to successfully and smoothly remove swearing from a Tarantino film has a potential success rate on par with the Fremantle Dockers winning a Premiership.

Ah yes that cut by Channel 7 was appauling, specially as it was on at 9.30 pm with an AV rating. I dont think the lip sync is the best in some scenes anyway and this boys cannot describe how bad this was. I still need therapy.

i started reading the script for Res Dogs. Slightly different. There was an interesting caption to be inserted @ the start of the film but I forgot what it said now.:D
Will post tomorrow when I grab the book from work, but It would be cool if it was re put in

My copy of Reservoir Dogs with Mr. Brown on the cover arrived today. I forgot how hard this film rocked. Bloody marvellous, and finally seeing it in widescreen. What a huge difference it makes, especially in the scene with Mr. White taking Joe's address book. Seems to place the camera in a different spot, and so much better. The inclusion of a full frame versio in the DVD beats me. If people dont like W/S I have 2 words for them. Watch FU*KIN VHS.
And the 2 different takes on the ear removal in the torture scene. By not showing the removal as in the film it is more powerful. Some good stuff.!!
