Apologies to all as this is a bit of a newbie question that would have
been asked many times over the year, but my searches through Google's
news archives haven't found me the answer I need.

I've got around a $2000 I want to spend on a surround decoder and
speaker setup. I was thinking of getting Sony system and speakers, but
from all the bad comments I've read, it doesn't sound like this would be
a good idea. Unfortunately due to time restrictions when I get back to
Melbourne next week, if I can't find an alternative, I'll have to go
with Sony (please help!)

My requirements for the amp would be a 6.1 channel DD/DTS/Prologic 2
decoder/amp/receiver.

In terms of speakers I'd like a set (5 + sub), preferably smaller rather
than larger, though I guess the front's could be floor standing types.

The gear doesn't need to be the worlds most powerful, primarily for dvds (
of all types, but primarily ones with explosions, light sabres, cars)
but the ability to play them loud at times would be nice.

Any recommendations anyone can give would be great, as would suggestions
for reputable dealers around Melbourne I should contact for prices.

Save me from Sony :)

Not sure about 'reputable dealers' but if you find what you want, JB Hifi
are always open for a good haggle and you can usually get 10-30% off! They
don't stock Yam, but have some Onkyos that could be an alternative... for
Yam, maybe worth pricing www.theloudspeakerkit.com - get 10% off by asking,
prob more with haggle!

Cheers, Jason (remove === to reply)

How about a Pioneer 811(about $750) and an Accusound speaker setup(about
$1000 delivered, inc sub)?

BTW, What Hi Fi do love the Sony 550 in a box thingo. Speakers, inc sub,
decoder and dvd player. Retails at about $1200 i think.

Al.

I've got the 450 and am very happy with it.

I don't profess to be a serious home cinema user but I really do think it is
quite good.
