Simo - yes I am reasonably impressed with the 70-300 APO II, and as you saw the moon shot was taken with it. From what I've seen people have done considerably better moon shots with L-series lenses and orig canon teleconverters, but that is a hell of a price difference.

It cost me $200 US including postage, so AUD270. How much was yours so I can get a calibration on Hugo's prices? I don't know if you saw my message in another thread, but I was very happy with Hugo's service. Fast, helpful and saved me around 30% on the cheapest Oz prices. (lens, flash and a cf card).

Cheers

Julian

That's a good price. Mine cost a little over $300AUD. Still a damn sight cheaper than Australian prices.

Julian

I missed your earlier thread. Does Hugo have a website?

hugo's website is urphoto.com but it's all in chinese and it's only about
photo printing, not gear. best way is to contact him via the email address
in the fred mirandan sell/buy forum (pricelist of current gear there too).

i ordered a sigma 70-200/2.8 EX from hugo last thursday and it arrived on
monday...! that's 4 days from hong kong including placing the order, better
than virtually any mail order supplier. Cost worked out to under $900 AUD
incl shipping and insurance... local price is over $1800.

only problem is the damn thing is front-focusing so i hope sigma AU can fix
it... otherwise hugo said he'd send a replacement but i'd rather not run the
customs/GST gauntlet again if i can help it (no problems 1st time around)

Just another vote for HugoSo. I ordered a 15-30 Sigma W/A zoom at lunchtime Monday, and it was on my desk (in Newcastle) Thursday morning after going through the works mail system. Must have arrived here Wenesday. I can't get goods from Sydney that quickly
!
Total cost A$688 as opposed to A$1234 from Dirtcheap Cameras.
Now if only I'd known this before I spent $3500 on a 100-400 L IS ;-((
Cheers...
Phillip..

To give you an idea of what you are in for (or has yours arrived yet?) I have put a few example macros done with the Sigma on the web. Have a look - DEFINITELY not for artistic or technical excellence, but it does give you a good idea of what the lens is like.

The images are compressed more than out of camera (about 500K each) but otherwise as the camera did it.

http://members.austarmetro.com.au/~julian/flower1.jpg
http://members.austarmetro.com.au/~julian/flower2.jpg
http://members.austarmetro.com.au/~julian/mug.jpg

I think the tomato plant hairs and the furtherest of the 3 tomato flowers (the only one in focus) show that at 200mm this lens has a very respectable resolution. Not to mention the camera. Did I mention the camera?

I also think the red flower might be showing the limitations of sRGB but I don't have colour management sorted yet to allow me to use adobeRGB.

I look forward to your impressions and comparing notes.

Julian

Warren, My 70-200 did the same, so I returned it to Hugo. He sent me a
replacement while mine was in transit back to him. The replacement was
better, though slightly forward when wide open. Still very happy with the
Lens though.

Stew.
