Hi all. I'm looking for some advice. I'm just about to make the move back from sunny London to Brisvegas and have been spending quite a lot of time at work looking at tvs.

I was planning on taking my current Sony DVD kit back to Australia as it's region free. However, I then discovered that very, very nice 86cm TV Sony is selling, and decided I need one of those.

So now I'm left with a dilemma. Do I ship my DVD kit home, or buy a new one that outputs progressive scan (current player only does SVideo)?

I had a quick look on Sony's site and saw the DAVS550. Sounds OK, but do Sonys in Oz have region lock (I would guess so)? How easy are they to get modified? Are there any alternative progressive scan packages in the same price range that are better or offer no region lock?

I'm open to all options, but don't want to spend a huge amount on the DVD kit - and I'm not interested in buying the components seperately. I'm far too lazy for that!

Thanks for your help!

Hi Trawler. How long were you in London? Glad to be coming back?

Don't be too concerned about regional coding down here. Every one that I
have purchased has been region free right from the box. If it is not region
free, there are hacks everywhere on local boards explaining how to fix the
problem.

I am sure someone will remind me, however there have been plenty of posts
regarding sales of Progressive and region free units. Most have been around
$120AUD which should equate to about 1 of your British Pounds. LOL

If you can find a buyer for your existing stuff, sell it and grab new stuff
when you get here. They will be as cheap as chips compared to your Pounds.
Or if you like it, ship it over. Just remember the AC adaptor for our wall
sockets.

Good luck mate.

Only $120 for a progressive scan player? I spent more in the pub last night!

Will be good getting back to Oz, for sure. Been here for four years now, so that's long enough (especially in winter!). Taking a few pounds back with me, so spending time it is! ;)

So it's sounding more and more like I'll get a whole new kit when I get in. Will do some browsing on the group and see what the best thing to go for is (though I do like the idea of an all Sony setup).

Thanks for the help!

No worries. Take a browse through some Australian discount store catalogues
online and you will be pleasantly surprised at the prices these days. AGAIN,
especially given the strength of the Pound.

If you have trouble remembering any stores, or would like URL's of new ones,
let us know. We would be more than happy to supply them for you.

Take care.

Actually, some URLs would be really, really helpful. Obviously there is google, but results from that aren't always the most reliable!

At the end of the day, I'll most likely buy from a local retailer (megamart is close to my place), but having some low prices from online shops will always help drive the price down.

Hi Trawler, since you mentioned Sony, I can recommend the dvpns-730 which is both pal and ntsc progressive scan. I own one myself and rate it very highly both for picture quality and disc handling. It is region free out of the box, and can be purchased for about 260 after a bit of haggleing. It has a 14bit 108mhz dac and 192hz audio, worth a look in my opinion.

Hi Trawler.

I came to Oz about 4 Years ago now and brought my UK stuff with me.

There are some things I would bring and others I would not.
The UK pound is not great at the moment against the Oz $
$1 = 42p
about 6 months ago it was
$1 = 34p - so you got more for your UKP.

Anyway.
You can get really cheap stuff here but that is what it is CHEAP.
When I was looking for things like DVD players and a reasonable amp.
I had a look at prices in the UK and they were alsways cheaper.
EG. Yamaha RXV 1200 amp
Oz - $ 1600+
UK - 400 UKP
Just had a look at Richersounds for a comparison.
Yamaha RXV 440 219UKP
Len Wallis A$799
http://www.lenwallisaudio.com.au/products/index2.php?tid=42

The only thing you have to decide on is the warranty stuff I suppose.

If you have a good DVD player then there is no issue on bringing it here, works fine as long as it is region free.

AS FOR THE TV
I would not bring this in to Aus.
Sell it there while you can.

Although Oz is PAL the Audio is at a different frequency so you will not be ablt to use it as is.
I had to buy an old Video player just for the tuner and use video / Audio out, so Now we have 3 Remotes.
UK TV.
UK VCR
AUS VCD ( this was a faulty one I got where the tape machanism was faulty but the tuner was OK.

If you want some more sites for HiFi stuff just go to
yahoo.com.au
and search on hifi retail and click the Aus only button.

Hope this helps.
