other 'bugs' in firmware version 1.1...
- Several times after I have played a Xvid file on a disc, I then insert an original DVD, and the OSD timer comes up by default and has to be turned off.
- Also, if you insert an original DVD, it does all the normal stuff, then gets to the menu, where you can select 'play movie', 'extras', 'language' etc.
After playing the movie (or part therof) if you press 'stop', and even 'stop' again, when you hit 'play' it just starts the movie from the beginning without going through to the normal DVD menu.
In fact there appears to be no way to get back to the main menu, without ejecting and reloading the DVD disc. (especially as the 'menu' button just brings up the 'evil hand')
On other players, if you 'stop' (sometimes x2, otherwise it resumes when you press play) and then 'play' it takes you to the DVD's main menu.

THe OSD problem is also there with the original firmware every time I play a MP4 file the OSD reverts to on when I put a normal DVD in. There is definitely 3 or 4 buttons on the remote that have some how become victims of P-UPs in the 1.1 firmware.

Another problem which is probably not fixable for this model but the manufacturer should regard for the future is the remote control. This remote control is by far the worst I have ever known for usability. Im not sure if it is the IR reciever or the remote itself but the need to continually have ensure that I am well in line with the Player in order for the remote to work is a pain. I know that this is an issue because I am now on my 2nd Player and 3rd remote control, and they have all failed the my personal IR test, stand 3-4 metres back from the player and point the remote to the ceiling at about a 45% angle. if the ceiling is white the remote should work. This remote has trouble if im 3 metres from the player and point the thing directly at it.

So will there be a firmware update for a bigger cd support, it basically chucks most cds out now..pretty redicularous, and I'm not going to convert all my 600 cd's to 'other' cd's.. :/

Hmm, oh well *shrug*

ftp://ftp.jokiin.com/
It's listed somewhere above, but as this thread is getting verrrry long, I can understand it being overlooked.
I think when firmware v 1.2 is released, we had better start a new thread. :)

Another problem ..... This remote has trouble if im 3 metres from the player and point the thing directly at it.

Wow, I must have got one of the 'lucky' ones, my remote works even when I point it at a 90' angle, straight up at the roof. (approx 4.5-5 meters away).
In fact, if I stand next to the unit, block the signal with my body, and shield around the end of the remote to stop any 'leaked' signal, I can still point it at the back wall, and it still works (a distance of 9-10 meters return!). (this also works pointing towards the back wall, but at a 45' angle, so that it hits the ceiling first!! (some mathmatical genius can probably tell us the distance for that)

If you want to go to the dvd menu during playback press the 'title' button, also I tried stopping the disc and then pressing play which played back from where I stopped (even though the manual says to press resume to do this), if I pressed stop twice it would play back from the start. The only annoying thing (for me anyway) is that it doesn't resume play if the disc has been removed, my other players do it and it's a feature I like.

Hi Jok11n, are you thinking of firmware 1.0, as so far any discs I have tried with firmware 1.1, the 'title' button just brings up 'the hand'.
Also, on other players I've used, if you stop 1x, you can resume by 'play', but if you stop 2x if you 'play' it goes back to the dvd menu.
On this one, (fwv 1.1) I can only get back to DVD menu by 'eject' x2 (i.e. eject, reload disc).
The 'title' button definitely does not bring up the DVD menu on mine. (Anyone else?)
Also, I agree, resume of disc after eject would be nice.

Got meself one of these to replace my ole trusty Hiteker AD-600A, simply due to divx playback. I'm very nostalgic about my Hiteker, and still works perfectly. Anyway, to business...

Two issues - One has been mentioned once, but seems to have been forgotten... Disable Macrovision (for people with VCR video throughput, etc)

Second thing is, I had a DVD-RAM thingy, but too many disk incompatibilities and UDF problems - Have now gotten a Diamond Data DVD+/- burner which also has HD-CD. Nero 5599 and up supports HDCD and it's a great feature. 1.4Gb on a standard 700Mb disk. UNfortunately, Nero gets confused with 800Mb disks and HDCD. Anyway... Point 2 is ... Having the XMS-888 recognise HDCD disks.

This may not be solely a software issue though (Am not sure) as the Pits and ridges on HDCD are much shorter than standard, and may need specific hardware for playback?

It's a thought though. 1.4Gb on a standard 35cent 700Mb disk for Divx is just the thing !!!!

I know what you mean about the 660, good unit that one. I still have one but can't use it because the remote got wet and some of the buttons don't work, wouldn't be a problem but one of my nephews turned on the password and now I can't turn it off, very annoying.

Don't expect to see macro disabled on the 888, it's embedded in the chipset and ESS don't give any details as they are macrovision supporters, don't know about HDCD support, but I wouldn't expect it in this player. I have seen a Divx player that does support it though, still a few months away though.

Pressing the menu button during playback will take you to the menu you were last in, pressing title will take you to the main menu, don't press the stop button first though, just do it while playing.

Ok, jok11n, figured it out, I know how to break it.
1. Power off the XMS-888, put in a disc with Xvid file, play it, stop it, eject it.
2. Put in an original DVD disc... 'title' button is broken.
3. Power off DVD, power on DVD, problem fixed, 'title' button works again.
It seems that playing an avi file stuffs it up.
edit: same for menu button.

I'm using firmware 1.1 and the title button takes me straight to the dvd menu, have you tried this on a few different dvd's?

The title button was definitely disabled on my first unit after the firmware was updated(tested with R1,R4,R0, dvdr, dvdrw - copies; Terminator 3, LOTR, Aliens, Matrix, Matrix Reloaded and a dozen other originals). Additionally the PBC menu somehow got attached to the PREV button because if I pressed this button while on the first chapter of the DVD the PBC menu came up (andw you should try this).

The new unit is currently behaving as expected for DVD playback and until I have tested as many combinations as possible I wont update the firmware.

I don't know if it was coincidence or just one of those things but shortly after I applied the firmware patch the player did a few strange things when playing DVD's until it died all together. The first replacement unit died before I had a chance to open the DVD tray. My current unit (no. 3) seems fine and so far all is well.

David, thanks for the response. I tried doing that earlier and it's not letting me get past the preferences screen. Should I have a Zone 1 disk in at the time?
