yep Australian law (like other Western countries) does not allow ppl to make backup copies of movies and music, even for personal use. Bacause the original work is written and it would be like plagarism.
Another irony of the law is that it allows u to make a backup copy of software (in this country u can anyway), but isn't this originally in some form of a "written" language?
It should be legal to backup your legally bought cds and dvds for personal use (eg. if yr original broke). Industry now wants to sue the makers of dvdXcopy for allowing u to do this. They are becoming bigger than the law as RIAA has shown with the mp3 debate.

I know, people often confuse US laws with Australian laws (much like people dialing 911 in an emergency). Your example is not plagiarism, it is copyright violation which is illegal. The US situation has a "fair use" provision which is similar to our ability to go into a public library and photocopy parts of a book. I wonder why there has not been a similar treatment of movies and music?

in the US, the dmca specifically prevents people from circumventing any kind of digital copy protection. I guess that would mean that even if backup copies were allowed, removing the copy protection from a dvd is illegal. It's probably a way around the fair use copyright provisions. The US government and copyright holders are pressuring most other countries to adopt similar laws. The Aus-US free trade agreement will probably require a significant commitment from the Australian government on digital copyright protection.

I figured out how to work the EQ function playing mp3/divx files on the XMS-888.

1. Press EQ - a setting screen appears saying "standard"
2. Press the play button to cycle thru EQ presets
2a. Cycle to "personal" if you want to set your own EQ - use the navigation arrow keys (around enter button) to customise each frequency
3. Press EQ twice to turn on
4. Press EQ again to turn off

I'm using the updated firmware from jok11n. I apologise if this has already been reported - this thread is too long.

I'm not the only one thats had 'finger problems' either.
I wonder what else there is to be found thats not explained in the manual.

The manuals are never the best resource, sometimes you just need to work it out. Most of these Chinese products are like that unfortunately.

Has anyone else experience a loud pop noise wen pressing mute/pause/stop/going into setup or even going from volume 1 to volume 0. (it seems like any time the unit mutes the audio i get a POP !). Im using the MR,ML outputs with prologic on and downmix to stereo.

My unit looked like it had been opened when I bought it, once getting home I find it has no manual, no av leads plus it makes this pop noise.. I suspect the unit was faulty and returned so the retailer has simply reboxed it and tried to resell it.

How dodgy is that ! I suspect the Brisbane Car Sound will be getting me a new unit in tomorrow that hasn't been tampered with.

If you are sure that all your connections are good, the most likely there is something wrong with it. Take it back, you should have no trouble getting it swapped for a new one. Most likely is that the store didn't know that it had been repacked, after xmas you get people returning things asking for an exchange, unwanted gift etc. They just neglect to tell you that they broke it, can't work it out etc, happens often unfortunately.

There should be no trouble getting it swapped, if you have any trouble contact me via PM and I will do something for you.

I've been dreaming, of a brand new firmware ...

A firmware fit to be called 1.2 ...

Where the audio works ...

And other things work ...

And hopefully not in the too distant future

Before the other divx players hit the market.

:) :) :)

What exactly does your Pirate DVD business have to do with firmware? Has anyone banned this idiot yet?

Hi Guys,

Has someone tested this player with R1 discs or is there a code to unlock it. Just want to make sure before I start ordering movies from the US.

Cheers,

Andy

jok11n,

I took the player back. I told him it was missing manuals (no great loss) and av cables and the sound makes the horrid pop when it mutes. He tested the unit and confirmed it is faulty. They wanted to give me the display model (they seemed a bit hesitant about getting me a new one, I dunno maybe he thought he was heping me by getting a replacement right away) but I said id rather wait for an unopened unit this time thanks! As it turns out it left my receipt at home HA ! so i'll have to take it back in tomorrow morning with the receipt so they can get me a new unit in stock.

But I will say i'll be highly unimpressed if after the trouble i've had if they try to palm their display stock off on me. If the new unit comes opened and i suspect its display stock I'll just get a refund.

I always found Brisbane Car Sound to have excellent service. Never a problem. Remember, you can take it back to any outlet, not just the one you bought it from. The guys at Mt Gravatt are very good. And, for their service to me, I have provided them with this forum link for anyone who wants to region unlock the player. They were very grateful for that.

Cheers

Jok1n,

Sorry if these have already been posted (probs noticed in v1.1):

I've noticed if u press goto whilst playing a divx u can jump to a time index (great) BUT... can the title be fixed ? It currently says TITLE255255 how about something more sensible like GOTO.

Also when u press OSD to turn off the timer during a movie it keeps turning back on with each new disc (may even do so with multiple movies on the same disc) a more sensible default would be to not have it show unless u press OSD to bring up the menu (i.e off by default for when viewing a movie not on by default). This is how every other player is ! (maybe i've missed an option in the preferences menu)

both your issues have already been addressed in this thread
the TITLE255255 issue was posted by me
someone else posted the OSD default to off issue - wishlist for firmware 1.2

you are forgiven for not reading 415 posts :)

i am posting this to make sure that the xms888 thread remains on top of the list, on top of peoples' minds, and top priority for a new firmware. shamelessly.

cheers
