Just out of curiosity, how did it get "thrown at a wall"? It must have been some party.
I'm back from holidays...
Just saw the post by lunchbox99 regarding the equaliser (play button, who'd have thought!), and added it to the 'website'.
If anyone knows of anything else, let me know, I'd like to keep as many hints and tips on the website as possible. (just keep pressing those buttons)

One more for the firmware wishlist
.MP4 is one of the default extensions recognised by under the mpeg4 standard, the player should be able to see these files, but it doesn't.

ahaha... i got pretty drunk :P
but dude i need a remote quick smart! theres no track buttons on the unit. just on remote :(
Dazed and confused wont play, no sound just crackle... :P

An update on my player. My mother took it back with a couple of the cd's that wouldnt work, the salesman tried them on the demo player and they worked, he then tried them on mine and they worked for him! They then rang me at work and I told him to take it out and try it again because it takes sometimes 5 times before it might auctually work. He tried it again after he hung up and he got the 'Disc Error' message so he told my mum that you sometimes have to put the disc in 5 times before it will work, as if thats normal for it!
I went in myself today and took my 3 spindals. He tried them on the demo player and they worked! He then went off and rung XMS and came back 5 minutes later sayin that he had to make sure that I flashed the firmware correctly and then once he found it was done correctly he said that he would be happy to swap it for another or send mine south for repairs which would take a week before i got it back, so I got it swapped but the only one he said he had left was the one on display, so I ended up taking that one knowing at least this one reads my cd's. Now my CD's play well on the exchanged player.
I would have rathered taking a new player but at least they play now.

Mine was the last one, the display model, they had in the first shipment at Strathfield Hurstville store...they sold out pretty quickly...I don't think they had even switched it on and they hadn't had any returns...supposedly... Anyway mines been fine...
Jok11n... I'd reckon we'd all be interested how many times the fw has been dld...do you have a counter on the FTP...they must've sold heaps of these and most comments continue to be reasonably positive....

I didn't have a counter on the site, although I've just added one now (bit of an afterthought but I don't normally care as my uploads are free anyway) I did have a look through the logfiles on my server and the ftp has been accessed quite a bit.
just wondering....
my box has a toll sticker on it to be sent to sydney on the 22th december
it was being sent to
WDS INTERNATIONAL
2c Brunker Rd
CHULLORA
ATT: George
it was being sent from strathfield cannington, albany hiway, cannington (perth) WA to that address
this is the importer isnt it? why would this box have been sent to a guy named george instead of being sold.... the store gave me a bit of a run around when i went to pick it up before, i have a feeling that this was meant to have been sent to be fixed?
its ex demo, the box had been opened....
should i take it back?...
i have declared the remote faulty as the pcb components are minimal and the connections are all ok the LED works so something maybe in the IC (TT6222-1) thats all i can think of....
i shall return to strathfield tomorrow and kick up.....
i figure my remote doesnt work... they gave me an ex demo model the box was sposed to be returned to the distributor the day before i got it....
they shouldnt object to supply me with a new unit.
any thoughts?

So is the remote faulty from being thrown at the wall or was it not working anyway? Contact me off list about it if you like and I can advise you further.

Went down to Gosford yesterday stock had just came in when i entered lol. Yeah these ppl are selling out very fast - cos theres no other cheap divX players out there (apart from the liteON which costs more) and the big manuf havent implemented this yet :(
So far pretty impressed. Has shoddy build quality for the price and a useless user manual that tells u nothing, but plays everything ive thrown at it so far, except some divX files has no sound :(:(:( and none of my cdrw's work cos it doesnt recog the UDF format with inCD or directCD. So if i u/g the firmware via cdrw i have to burn it onto disc using nero or wotever and close the CD? Does the XMS-888 read open session cds btw?
So thinking of u/g the firmware. The only problem i have is with the OSD being constantly on during playback of avi/divX. So jok11n can u guarantee that the new firmware wont screw up the player if i install it correctly? Where'd u get firmware again? Are u an insider? :P
cheers

XMS888 12/19/03 FW
fourcc codes:
MP42....mp42
DIV2....div2
DIV3....div3
MP43....mp43
DIV4....div4
DIV5....div5
DIV6....div6
DIVX....divx
DX45....dx45
DX50....dx50
DXSB....dxsb
XVID....xvid
RMP4....rmp4
file extensions:
MP3 MMP AC3 DTS DMC
ABS MPA WMA ASF WMV
m4v AVI DIV SMI SRT
SUB TXT VBS MPV DAT
VOB MPG JPG JPE WAV
MPEG ESS DIV AVI SMI
SRT SUB
It should be possible to change the file extension table to recognize the .MP4 extension. You would need to replace one of the current entries and patch the recompressed data into the ROM.
Happy Hacking!

I haven't seen a player yet that will read UDF format, this player certainly won't. It will read multi session discs that haven't been finalised, however when you do the firmware upgrade the disc needs to be closed, if in doubt ask. If you do it correctly you will have no problem at all. The timer issue is addressed in this firmware release along with a bunch of other stuff. I suggest you have a look at andw's site for some extra info that the manual doesn't explain well, check it out here

firmware is direct from the factory.

I hope you all realise that .mp4 files use a special mpeg 4 container (which is completely different to the avi container). So it is possible that it won't work properly, even if you hack the rom to allow the extension. Also, the official mpeg4 spec uses aac for audio, which may not be supported by the player either. However, you'd think that an mpeg 4 player would play compliant files.

Hey!
Good info.
Yes, adding the .MP4 extension would only get the firmware to recognize the file and show the file in the SmartNavi. Whether the firmware could handle the format is another issue.

I think an easier quick way of finding out if the player will play your .mp4 files, would be to rename them to an extension that is recognised, and see if it will play.
As long as the player looks at the headers, and not just the extension, that would at least indicate if it's playable.
p.s. skaman - what do you recompress with?

If you have an MP4 with the AVI (divx/xvid) and audio imbedded it works sometimes. If there are any menus etc the OSD counter flies along happily at about 4x but no video or audio. I tried this with divx extension and avi extension.
What I would like to see is MP4 container support because then you could at least add chapters and menus to DVD's that can hold about 6-7hrs of hiquality mpeg4 video/audio.

Now that's what I'm talking about :D
Has anyone got it working with aac audio ?
