That definately sounds like an interlacing problem to me. Perhaps when you encoded the video, you forgot to de-interlace and specified the source as being progressive (rather than interlaced).

A couple of pages back hoochiemamma posted that it was trouble with Box Set R1 DVD's, so I would imagine that it's not an encoding problem.
However, it does sound like an interlacing problem. The only way we'll ever really know, is if hoochiemamma plugs in the xms to another TV and tries it.

also would a movie at 1199 Kb bit rate and "ac3 (0x2000) Dolby Laboratories, Inc" audio work on the XMS-888?

Going on what -buts- posted earlier, (has also been put up on the website now http://www.xms-888.tk under 'Disc formats....') my guess would be yes.
As he tried a test cd that had lots of formats on it, and listed which ones worked.
(even 2 audio channel avi's)

No, I am not. I started to like this thing ;) I have problems with "white" disks (they are even worse than yellow, not sure) and all my disks encoded with earlier XVid. It's funny but just found that even the latest version of XViD codec can't play them on PC, just a rubbish on the monitor. I can play them only with the same version of XVid (May, 2002, in fact) they were encoded with. And non-standard audio, of course.

I ended up buying a Neuston DVX-1201.

They have a head office in Melbourne and offer full warranty accross Australia.

That's good Elsy, I've seen some good stuff about the Sigma based chipset players (I'm pretty sure that is what is in this.)
How much do they cost, are they only available via internet, do they go back to Melbourne for warranty? (These and many other Q's :) )
Let us know how you get on with it, what it supports etc.
Hopefully our new firmware will arrive sometime soon, and we can compare notes...
In case you didn't already know, the DVX-1201 has a new firmware http://www.neuston.com/en/1201download.asp

The DVX-1201 retails at $299 and the Media centre MC500 is $399. I was also looking at purchasing one but decided to go for the cheaper Strathfield player in the hope that they fix the problems on the firmware. Apparently there are retailers who stock the Neuston in Melbourne and it is available at most swap meets in Victoria also.

My guess is that all warranty issues would have to go back to Laurie from Neuston in Melbourne first.

But lets not get off the topic here, there is another thread for that player here also:) Now, where's my new firmware with subtitles support !:)

Cheers,

Nick.

Well the Sigma Designs chipset should play XviD fairly well, as they attempted to claim the XviD codec as their own (http://www.xvid.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=14) a while back.

Hi All,

Some more information on what plays/doesn't play...

I have found that music mp3s burnt on to DVDs play just as well as on CDs.
I tested this with about 2.5GB worth of mp3s on a DVD+RW disc.
No skipping at all (inner or outer tracks).

Also found that XMS will play DVDs burnt using ISO or UDF format.

In process of trying to back up my "Fellowship of the Ring" DVD (see earlier post in this thread about problem I have with damage inside track), I encoded it using DivX5.1.1 using "Maximum quality". This resulted in a 3.5GB avi file.

The ISO format does not allow such a large file, so I burnt it in UDF format.

Loading this into the XMS888, and looking at the OSD information, it correctly reports it as being 3.5GB and running over 3 hours long.
However trying to play it, it reaches 1hr 58min, then stops.

It must be that the XMS888 firmware can not handle files larger than 2GB.

Regards,

Laz.

^ might need to tell the manufactures of the XMS-888 about that (put it on the list)

Firstly a huge thanks to everyone , especially andw and jok11n for their monster efforts, really appreciated :)

Love the website and feel it is very important

I just got my player yesterday (all stores were sold out for a while) and i love it ! plays just about everything i have thrown at it save for some files i didn't think it would play (low audio bitrate avi)

Divx players are at an experimental stage right now, that's why i chose this player (at 188) and not a liteon or anything else more than a 100 more. I feel that by the end of 2004 there will be a quantum leap in the specs in new players and that extra 100 is better off going to get a new player then.

I am happy enough if the XMS 888 plays 90% of what i download (and i download 40 gigs a month) and it seems to be doing that. I only need it to get through this year, then i will upgrade to a new player

one little thing, when playing a divx avi, i couldn't get the 'GOTO' button to work. It came up with the text then when i tried to enter a time it just jumped to another file ! so if i entered a 1 it went to file 1. what am i doing wrong ?

out of all of the wishlist stuff already mentioned, subtitle support would be at the top for me. I have Battle Royale 2 ready to rock n roll :)

this thread is getting too long for its own good :P

I propose a complete forum dedecated to the XMS-888 (lol) and other mpeg4/divX capable players!
