View Full Version : XMS-888 - Mpeg4 - Firmware?
......one little thing, when playing a divx avi, i couldn't get the 'GOTO' button to work. It came up with the text then when i tried to enter a time it just jumped to another file ! so if i entered a 1 it went to file 1. what am i doing wrong ?
Hi Peterpack, it's very fussy, you must enter ALL the digits i.e. to go to 1hr 15mins 20 secs you must press
1. 'Goto'
2. '0' '1' '1' '5' '2' '0' (with the leading 0)
3. 'Enter'
(although with VCD, you can omit step 3.
Otherwise, it decides that you want to go to file number 1.
edit p.s. I would like subtitle support as well, but I think jok11n said that the next firmware would be concentrating on codecs and zooming. (although the manufacturers engineers are getting some more info from ESS, and a lot of the other players that use ESS have incorporated subtitles in their latest firmwares, so we can live in hope.)
There must be some sort of record for the maximum amount of replies / views on a single thread!!
I agree, a 'DivX Player Stuff' Forum would be good.

also is there a way to digest a DivX movie (ie: show 9 sence's in little box's on the screen so you can find a sence faster (like I could on my digiRED DVD player with Vcd's and Svd's)). There probably is a way but the manual doesnt provide any answers in clear english.
Slightly unrelated question.
I want to put many of my photos on CD to play on XMS888.
Is it possible to enable some music playing in background ?
Even more, is it possible to push "pause", "next" or "previous" photos
without music interrupting ? Can I change a time pause between
two photos ?

What you are asking for is not a Video question its an audio question and the answer is yes you can do what you are asking. Thats the good news, the bad news is you need to do this as DVD audio which means audio becomes the primary source the images are just manipulated as background to the audio. Next problem software, not many audio dvd authoring tools are available, what is is extremely expensive and requires a degree in advanced nuclear physics in order to operate them :)

Not sure about not interupting the music, but this program can do all the other things you want

I have a degree in elementary particles physics, is it good enough ? ;)

guys , hope someone can help with this
one of the favourite features on my other dvd player (a pioneer) is the 'Last Memo' feature. I press the last memo button, can then hit stop, then when i press last memo again, it will continue playing the movie from the point that i pressed 'last memo' . It's very useful for me because my attention span is very short and i often watch a movie in several sittings.
is there a similar feature on the xms-888 ? i thought the b-mark and resume button looked promising but didn't seem to work at all with an avi
can someone help ?
cheers people
I don't know of anything on the XMS-888 that does that at the moment. (although, if you have just pressed stop once, and not ejected the disc, you should be able to just hit play again to restart it.)
Some new players allow you to eject up to 5 discs, and resume them from where you left off when you reinsert them. I think that is a very good feature, and I would love to see it in the XMS-888. (can't see any reason why they couldn't incorporate it)
I always thought the DVD standard was lacking this one thing compared to video (i.e. with a video you could always eject it, and when you reinserted it, the tape was where you left it.) until some players came out with that feature.

Hey everyone
I first saw the XMS-88 about a week ago and didnt believe a DVD player could handle MPEGs (since expensive brands cant do it yet), so i came on thenet to do some research, and damn this forum is good!!
i've spent the last 3 days going over the 530 threads here and must say this fourum is great!!!
The most thanks must go to AndW and Jok11n for all of their work. And of cource everyone else that been posting.
Anyway...I havnt got an XMS-888 yet as i'm waiting to see v1.2 of the firmware first, hopefully it wont be too much longer.
I've been making a list of all the problems people seem to be having and will write it down in point form over the next hour or so, maybe later today or tomorrow ill post it here, then maybe Jok11n can review it and see if its good enough to be sent off yet..(I think there is going to be more than enough to make this update worth while for the supplier).
thanks guys :dD :dD

Hi Pocket, if you like, there is a list already at http://www.xms-888.tk under 'Firmware 1.1 bugs and wish list'.
If you print that out, and then add what you have additional to that, and post any additions, I can update the website.
That might save you some time.

Just another small quirk/issue. I tried watching some anime divx on the player, works fine but the display is too large for the screen, is there any way I can zoom out or something to fix it up because all the subtitles are off screen (or a way to move up the screen). If there isn't I guess the only solution is to re-encode the resolution of these files which weren't obviously suited for tv. (Or am I an idiot and should have used the tv settings to move up the screen somehow).

I had a problem with another file, a divx 5.0. Video ok, no audio.(Clicking and crackling sounds).
Audio details:
Bitrate:96kb/s (48/ch, stereo) CBR
Fs: 44100Hz
I used GSpot v2.21 to get these details. It works ok on the 'puter.
Perhaps newbies like me need to know the exact details that the firmware developers need to know of the MPEG-4 files that the player has troubles with.
I also wonder whether there is any clear picture emerging of which particular types of files or formats(Divx) the player is having problems with. Andw, I tried to see if you had such a list on your site but the network appears to be too busy to access it here at the moment. I cant see any real pattern emerging though, here, most of my divx's work, some dont.
As for the wishlist for firmware v1.2, if the player will play all the divx files( the video AND audio) that I download off the net, assuming that they have no errors, then I will be very happy. Thats fair enough, isnt it?
-datasha, *buts* posted a list of working formats, that I uploaded to the website, under the 'Disc Formats...' section. If the audio is ogg vobis and not mp3 encoded, I believe this is a problem, and has been asked to be fixed in FV1.2.
-Myges, what resolution is the anime in? I've only had problems with the picture not being big enough. On divX at the moment, there is only a 2x zoom, which is basically useless. this is also supposed to be a possible fix for FV1.2. If your TV supports NTSC, try switching the player to NTSC using the 'P/N' button on the remote control before playing the file. It seems to handle picture resolutions differently in PAL and NTSC.

Yep yep I fiddled with that and the PBS button for different results as well as the wide screen/letter box etc in the setup. In fact the only way I got to watch one of my anime episodes properly was to switch it to NTSC and then push the video button during play (only during play does it work), it will switch to pan scan and then I push it again since the display looks pretty messed up, and it will revert to interlace and for some reason rework the zoom such that the subtitles show. However, this solution only worked for one particular series. The resolution for the other series that did not work for is 512x384.
As for the one the solution did fix, that resolution was 640x480.
