Just wondering with the firmware update can it be done using a cd-rw?

yes Skreemin, the firmware upgrade can be done with a cd-rw, thats what i did mine with.

you can use a cd-rw and also a normal cd using a multi-session compliation in nero and when the next firmware comes out all you need to do is continue the multi-session and just delete the original firmware on the left and drag and drop the new one and burn :) (like how I did mine :D)

Hi there,
I bought one of these players on the weekend.
Pretty happy with the player. So far nearly everything I've tried in the thing has played fine :)
The only problem I've had is with a DivX 5 movie I have where it plays the video fine but not the audio, it's completely silent.
Here's a screenshot of what G-Spot reports on this movie file:

Does anybody know if this player should be able to handle this audio?
edit: After reading some earlier posts in this thread I tried the EQ button and yes the graphics do move, but I still get no sound on this particular DivX movie.
thanks

At a guess, possibly because of low bit rate, but ... I have an .mp3 file that doesn't play, and it shows up as a mono sound source, so I would lean more towards that being the problem. (maybe 1.2 will fix this)

Thx for the response guys mine is now updated :dD

Ok, pepito, you may have both problems, or either (mono and low bitrate)
I have two problems to report,
1.) no audio on low audio bitrate avi (56kbps stereo - mp3). see http://home.swiftdsl.com.au/~wweb/xms888/noaudio.JPG .
With this, there is no audio at all (video plays fine), if you use the graphic equaliser to 'visualise' the audio, there is the occaional small movement, but for the most part it stays flat. (seems to be the typical low bitrate / no audio that has been reported by others before).
2.) On a high video bitrate avi file (2034 kbps) I lose all controls. The file plays ok, but there is suddenly no working controls as far as 'goto', skip forward / back, fastforward / back, the 'hand' comes up.
(stop, play, pause all continue to work)
see http://home.swiftdsl.com.au/~wweb/xms888/nocontrols.JPG .
This exhibits the same symptoms as I have had when burning a disc at 48x, however, I have now burnt the disc twice at 12x, and the exact same problem occurs.

Thanks andw,
I assume someone has made the player manufacturer aware of these audio bugs? :)
Yes, it's all been sent up to them.

Cool
How did they did this stuff in the old days before the Net? :D

I have a new problem with the xms over the last few days i am getting snow effect thru the image, i have tried cleaning the effected dvds and the player itself but this problem is only with the xms 888. Basically every second dvd or avi disc is showing these symptoms almost like a black n white version of laser rot. Its not power its not the discs and its not the TV. Anyone else having any problems like this ?
Can we add the following to the desirable features list of firmware 1.2 ? As I understand when player is reading avi's, it is first reading index and then starts playing. I think there is a time limit to read the header of the file (like 2 secs). If not successful during this time, the player comes out with "disk error". For "light" CD's like white, yellow it's a problem. Can this time limit be increased via firmware ? I already wrote before that I am having problems with some disks. However, if I switch the player off and let it to cool down, then those disks play fine. If you pause, rewind them in the middle of the movie, no problems. If you stop them, they won't play again. You need to switch it off for 15 mins. I think that for some disks there is no sufficient time to read the header of the avi file to start it playing and the player comes out with the "disk error".
I already asked for another exchange again, but they are out of stock at the moment.
However, it could resolve "disk errror" problem during reading of the header.
....

hmmm.... this problem may not be with high bitrate, it's looking more like a media problem. I am trying a different media and will report back. (seems to be affecting a file at 1089, but not one that is at 1104) they are on different media (working one (1104) is on DigiMedia 90min (24x max)disc, non-working one (1089) on Strathfield branded 48x 80min red disc).
Will now burn non-working onto 90min disc, and see if it works.

Hi buts, I've added it to the website under 'Wants for Firmware 1.2'.
I have a new problem ...i am getting snow effect thru the image...
Is this 'snow' like with bad reception on TV, or artefacts in the image?
(Video signal processor?)

Looks like it is a media error. The non-working file plays fine, with all controls when I burnt it onto the 90min disc. I am now trying the file in the above example (listed as 'nocontrols.jpg') that is 2034 kb/s on an 80min Akai disc.
It's rather a strange problem, as the file itself plays fine, but you lose all of the ffwd, goto, skip controls, and yet it seems to be related to the disc...
Will report back on how the Akai disc goes.
Akai disc with the 2034 kb/s avi file and DigiMedia 90min disc both have no controls on playback, although they playback fine. (play, pause, stop only work).
DigiMedia 90min disc with .avi of 1089 kb/s works fine.
It seems to be that it could be a problem with high bitrate and a problem with certain disc media, and / or high bit rate.
-- Just tried another Strathfield Red 48x 80min disc with another file that I did earlier, it is 1003kb/s and all controls work on this...
It just gets weirder and weirder. (maybe -buts- idea of being more careful reading the header would help)
All these files are Xvid's, encoded with the same program!?!
Why does the 'hand' come up on the control buttons on some .avi files and not others, and yet disc media can also make a difference??
Anyone else tried the controls on high bitrate avi?
-buts- on the test cd you downloaded, there is a file '6k-320.avi - 1-pass 6378 kb/s, MP3 320kb/s' - does this allow you to skip forward, or rewind, or use 'goto'?

Its like a cross between poor tv reception and someone using a vacuum cleaner near your tv.
This is why I tested the unit with 2 tv's different discs and swapped discs between players as the problem occurred. It is more obvious with avi files which leads me to believe I may be watching the beginning of another hardware failure
