Bloody Hell!.
I finally reached the end. What a marathon read.
Good work to most of you guys there is a real lot of constructive writing in this.
I wish there was a smiley for sleepy
Any files that cause you issues would be appreciated, particularly audio related or files that do not zoom correctly. I also recall mention of a 600mb download from a german forum that had a heap of different sample files, I did have a look at the forum that was mentioned but couldn't find the file, if anyone can provide a link to this file would be good.
It is better to download TestCD from ftp://ftp.mtu.ru/pub/horgi/outdoor/DivXTestCD.zip. With a fast connection
it is 2-3 hours. However, all audio play fine there, they use standard bitrates
in MP3. The only useful files for us are files with all non-standard
resolutions. It is around 30 Mb only. So if you could provide ftp or some
internet storage I can upload it. I shall also cut out few samples from my
CD's which produce breaking sound or no sound at all. PM me.

I can't get access to that ftp server, I keep getting an error message about not allowing passive mode, do you need a user name, password or whatever?
I'll get back to you later with some details of an ftp location where you can upload some samples, I'm still receiving some files from others at the moment, so I'll let you know when it's available.

Yep, it does not allow passive mode ... However, I cleared PASV box
in GetRight's proxy settings and it is working fine. Just checked.
No username or password.

Still no go, I get in but then get error massages anyway.
Hi guys,
Does the XMS-888 have Macrovision defeat?
Thinking of buying one today in Melb, any comments before I jump?
What are the chances of getting a dud unit? Just make sure I get a well packed and clearly unopened carton?
Thanks.

No Macrovision removal.
Only my third unit is fine, all unopened :( The first one didn't wake up from the standby mode after 2-3 hours. Very annoying and impossible to reveal in the shop. I replaced it and got another one which had a weak laser. Some of 'light' CD's (yellow, light green etc) started to play when the unit is cool. After warming up (15 mins) they didn't start, just "disk error'. After 1 hour it was getting even worse. I went to the shop and insisted to wait for 20 mins. Then they gave up and replaced it. 100% sure they reselled it.
Maybe, just not lucky. My advice: take few CD's (DVD's play fine, no problems with them) and play
it for a while.

Strange ... Try to go to ftp://ftp.mtu.ru/pub/horgi/outdoor/ in internet
explorer and click the TestCD file there. It should be fine with a disabled
downloader. No resume in this case I suppose.
Crikey..... that does not inspire confidence! Do they allow you to open one up and test it there?
But your 3rd one is still running fine?
Which place did you get it from?

I'm still on my first one, so I have been happy.
But the Strathfield guys in my local store (Cannington WA mind you), were more than happy to open up the box and let me play a few sample CD's.

I'll send you a small piece of the Nights Of Cabiria divx file that has no audio on the XMS 888.
To anyone: What's a simple little program I can use to chop out a small sample of the .AVI file to send to jok11n?

Yes, it is fine now. No probs with testing in the shop (strathfield, ACT),
just do it with more than 1 CD disk type.

VirtualDub
VirtualDub http://www.virtualdub.org/ allows you to set start, and end.
Set Video and Audio to 'Direct Stream Copy' , set the start and end markers,
then 'File, Save as avi' give the new section a name, and away it goes (very quick if doing Direct Stream copy)

Thanks, worked nicely.
I now have a small 300Kb avi chunk to send Jok11n.
What's the best way to get it to you?

Actually I don't mind if the sample is bigger, I'd rather have a decent size sample that gives a reasonable amount of playback time. If you want to email me any samples I can accept whatever size your outgoing mail allows you to send, and if you can give detailed info about what you know about the file, bitrate, freq etc and the problem experienced it would be helpful.
Thanks

I'm not sure what you are getting at, andw has done a great job putting a helpful site together, how people get there has little relevance, as long as they actually get there and find useful info then it's doing it's job.
Nice job andw, I don't think i've thanked you publicly, but your efforts are appreciated, THANKS!
