As far as the heat issue causing the disk error problems for you (great work on that experiment you conducted :) ), my player sits directly on top of my Technics SA-AX730 amp, which is notorious for the heat it produces (I'm talking fry an egg stuff), and as I said above - no probs! Guess it just depends on the unit / components you get.
That certainly should tell you that you don't have issues relating to heat, but I wouldn't leave it there anyway, amps need ventilation (that's why they have all these holes in the top)
Foultaste,
Could you please tell me what the serial number of your new unit is?
Thanks.
Hi people,
The new replacement player is working flawlessly as far as disc errors go. The only thing I have noticed that this new player seems to have wrong since I flashed up to 1.1 is that when ever I enable the EQ I get a very loud screeching which if not careful could easily damage your speakers and/or your ears. The only way to stop this is to not use the EQ, which I am happy to do. I can't recall, anyone having this issue before, any idea's? Perhaps a reflash might help?
Also slightly off topic and this may be a really dumb question, but is there any way to tell using Gspot or some similar tool how many passes an avi file has been encoded with?. I seem to remember a forum somewhere, where someone said their was with Gspot but they didn't enlarge, can someone enlighten me perhaps pleeeese?
Cheers,
Foul.

Hiya,
My serial is 03111213
BTW, I realised that the screeching on the EQ only appears to happen on xvids encoded with AC3. I have tried around 5 cd's that have AC3 and they all have that issue.
I do not usually use the EQ anyway and therefore I cannot recall if I had the same issue on my returned unit.
I am not really that fussed about it, but perhaps its something that needs looking at.
Cheers,
Foul.

Hi.
I too have experienced the screeching, but it was on a commercial audio CD that contained both a data track (multimedia features) and audio tracks.
It was as if the unit was playing the data track as audio.
In my case powering down the unit and trying again worked.
Cheers,
Laz.
Definitely sounds like a bug to fix then. The screeching is very LOUD and can be damaging to speakers.

Could be firmware related also, perhaps not knowing what the file format is. I'll see if I have a sample file in that format and try it
I haven't had any AC3 encoded avi's yet, and I haven't noticed any screeching, so maybe it is the AC3 stuff that's doing it.

I suspect heat could be an issue. Really hot here today and some disks that normally play took a few attempts. (So the missus says).
Jok11n, I will try to find the time to download virtualdub and cut segments of my movies that wont work(no audio) that i think should work. However time and bandwidth are in short supply here.
Hopefully in time to be of assistance with the development of firmware v1.2 or maybe future firmwares if these issues aren't resolved with this release. Good work everybody!

bandwidth is no problem on my end but obviously the restriction is on your end, but even a small sample would be sufficient. If you can get something to me in the next day or so would be good. I should have an interim firmware in the next few days, there are still issues that will need to be resolved but these are things that are waiting on clarification from ESS and sample files from us so that the remainder of the issues can be resolved.
Currently I am writing many of my CD's on DVD-R disks and found
a tricky thing. Say, your movie plays without sound. Here is the possible
way to cure this file. Open Gspot 2.21 and read interleaving info about your file (interleaving rate ... ms and preload: ... ms).
Take the last VirtualDubMod 1.5.10.1 with VBR support. Set up video to
direct copy and audio stream (right click on the stream in the list
of streams) to direct copy as well. Set up interleaving options to the
same values as in Gspot. Save. If you set different interleaving options
or try to reencode audio stream to a different bitrate you likely to get
A/V not synchronized.
The size of the file likely be exactly the same (not 100% sure).
However, the header structure is a bit different.
This new file will play with audio ... It works on many of my files with
bitrate < 128 kbs. Probably it won't work on 22Khz files, not sure though.

I think that most files, with the exception of the low freq ones can be made to play with a bit of minor fiddling and a reburn, but it would still be nice if we can get the player to handle them without having to redo it.

Amen to that! Jokiin, it's good to see the support that the factory is offering, being prepared to release an interim firware to fix the issues they can presently, then another one later to fix the rest of the issues. It would have been very easy for them to just say "sorry, you get nothing until we get to the bottom of all these issues".
BTW, after your comment about proper ventilation, I have decided to move my player from on top of my amp. No point tempting fate :)
A request, re-stated from previous posts by others: when fw1.2 does come out, how about a new thread????

Good idea, when the next firmware arrives I'll start a new thread, that will make it easier for people with these players that might not follow all the posts in the original thread.

A very good idea as this thread is a Monster and may in fact make it difficult for people new to EYO forums to get the info they need.

Agreed about the size of the thread which has remained on topic which is unusual in a forum, I think it shows how much interest that there is in the format in general.

Not wrong there, 57+ pages and on topic, in a forum? I wouldn't believe you if I hadn't seen it for myself.
This has probably happened as I hadn't posted in it ;)
Whoops now I have and it has gone off topic :PI

Guys
My apologies if this has been covered before but i have some .m2v music video's on CD. Can the XMS play .m2V files?
Also what's the technology after MPEG4. Is it planning to be around for a good time to come?
I'm also after the website to update the firmware.
Thankyou
Robbie

Go to www.xms888.tk there you will find links to firmware, codec support, file formats etc.
skaman had a dig around in the firmware, from his report .m4v extension is listed, but I don't see .m2v.
You could always try it on a shop player. (take some discs in)

If you want to know if .m2v files are supported you can send us a link to download or provide a sample and it can be tested for you.

Thanks guys. I will be going to Strathfield on Saturday and will take a cd that contains .m2v files. If I buy the player (is there any new reason why i shouldn't???) i will report back my results.
