View Full Version : What Tripod

hi folks, bro-in-law is after a tripod for christmas (he has an IXUS 400 and
a small digicam), so it would be for mainly night shots with the IXUS and
for movies with the video)
Has anyone got any recommendations for a reasonable tripod around the $100
mark (or am I dreaming??)
Have been warned off the Sliks due to lack of quality and the Manfrottos are
a little out of the price range
What about velbon etc?
thanks in advance

My Slik is also out of your price range (800 ballhead, 700 legs -
AU$300) but the quality is great. Even Henrik (Gitzo-man) didn't dismiss
it out of hand :-)

I have a Sony 505v and I use a little ballhead (Giotto $75) on a second hand
pair of slik aluminium legs I got for $10. A very light combo and heavy
enough for what is essentially a compact camera. You can always hang a bag
of sand from the center for extra stability.

With 700 legs you could call it a slick centipede ;-)
The IXUS weighs practically nothing, so any Velbon SLR tripod will do.
They are lightweight and usually come with their own carry bag. I
think they sell a pretty good model around the $80 mark, or something
a litle sturdier around the $119. Shop around though, as prices can
vary quiet a bit. Oh, and make sure you get an SLR tripod, not a video
camera tripod. They are different. SLR has tilt and pan, where as
video only has pan (on cheaper models that is).
Good luck.

Millipede, surely :-)
Very happy with this tripod, BTW, for both the 10D and the MiniDV video
camera.

well maybe they were talking about the budget sliks...as yes you probably
get what you pay for but thought there might be some good value, reasonable
tripods out there.

I'm sure others have commented, but I find the Manfrotto 055Pro legs
to be just fantastic.
Little expensive, but worth every penny....

Look, lets get down to brass tacks.NONE of the plastic hinged tripods are great no matter what brand name is on it!
Go into a shop and play with them all.Just twist the top with Your fingers and you'll find out very quickly which ones are reasonably stiff and which are just useless.Pick the stiffest feeling one you can get for you money-no matter what brand it is.
