Depends upon your reception.
I only got all my channels tuned in with my rabbit ears, the external
antenna kept dropping some.

I used to before i moved to a house with an external arieal, but i could
only ever get 2 channels at a time, so if i had it tuned to channel 9, and
then wanted to watch channel 10 i would have to fiddle around with the
arieal and find the spot where channel ten seemed to work but 9 wouldn't.
But once it was in the right spot i got excellent reception (for that
particular channel)

as in i thought there was no such thing as bad reception in terms of image
quality like on normally tv's

It can still be perfect some of the time and unwatchable at other times.
Sometimes it is perfect apart from occasional square/block pixellisation or
split second audio dropouts. These things depend on signal strength, quality
of your aerial/cabling and even weather conditions (in poorer reception
areas). Having said that I receive pretty good reception from the Wollongong
channels despite being in Sydney with a UHF/VHF aerial poinnting in the
other direction towards the North Shore transmitters. Plus I live in a unit
with a master antenna shared with 18 others.

If the signal's good enough it's perfect the whole time. And for the Sydney
channels I get moderate ghoting on Seven and ABC analog, yet it's perfect on
digital, even during the thunderstorms this week.

i ask because i would like to get a digital tv card for a pc and i would
hate it if i didnt get all the channels perfectly.

does any one know of a simple way to test signal strength? or is that for an
installer only?

If your analogue signal is passable on rabbit ears in that room then digital
will probably be fine.

the reason it wasn't working on particular channels, was because it was
getting a strong enough signal so all that was on the TV was the screen
telling me to check my antenna connection, as you move it around a bit and
find the signal before it properly locks on it sort of does the freeze frame
thing, where you see a only 1-2 frames per second, plus major pixellisation.
Eventually you find the spot where the signal is strong enough and you get
the generally excellent picture.

I've noticed that with marginal reception, the picture may be good with static or slow moving images, but when the TV images starting moving quickly with lots of action, the picture breaks up more.....

I would guess that it is because the reception is adequate for lower bit rates, but is tipped over the edge with higher bit rates when there is more action.
