Appleseed.
Hayao Miyazaki's work aside, this is definitely one of the better anime's I've seen over recent years.
The opening sequences are visually amazing making full use of the 3d style of cell-shading more often seen in video games, some great action and a magnificent track from the Boom Boom Satillites, Oakenfold and Basement Jaxx amongst others, so it's definitely one soundtrack designed for bass.
The actual story wouldn't of been to hard to create a live-action film from if they'd wanted, it's a great Sci-Fi post world war 3 setting. Sort of mans struggle against wiping themselves out with enevitable wars, while looking to preserve what's left of the earth in a utopian society, living side by side with bioriods (biomechanical human replacements). Now that I think about it, it's a pretty common amine theme, but done nicely.
One thing that stood out for me was the acuraccy of the motion capture. Ver nice rag-doll like structure making the human movements perfect.
hmmmmm, I'd say overall, 8.5/10

I saw Memoirs of a Geisha today. This was one of my most anticipated films in a long time, and I've come out of it with mixed feelings. Certainly nobody can dispute its visual beauty. Yes, it was slow moving, but this tone was perfectly understated. The settings and characters looked exactly how I had imagined. However like others have discussed in the thread, I think the use of English did seriously disrupt the flow.
There is so much talent here that is lost because they are working overtime just to pronounce every word right. The whole thing comes off as stillted and awkward
Yeah, I found myself not paying attention to what they were saying, but rather their clumsy pronunciations. Many dramatic scenes lost their effect due to the lack of conviction in the way the lines were delivered.
No matter who stars in this movie, it should never been made in the first place. Geishas are entertainers (sing, play music, dance and read poetry) not prostitutes! Arthur Golden described such practices as 'mizuage' or the selling of a young geisha's virginity to the highest bidder in his novel. He wrote such rubbish novel and typical Hollywood would make anything for $$$.
I'm curious Jenni - have you actually read the book? I'm not going to argue with you about Japanese culture as you obviously know more than I do, but I don't think you're entirely qualified to give that view of the book and/or film unless you've experienced them both. Golden most certainly portrays geishas as skilled artists of the highest integrity.
I've read the book 5 or 6 times. Had I not read it, I expect that the film would have been extremely dull and boring to me. The characters were grossly simplified (time constraints, I know). The childhood of Sayuri (or Chiyo, rather) was skimmed over in moments. Hatsumomo and Mother should have been infinitely more bitchy. Mameha's legendary status within the geisha community was not appropriately conveyed. Sayuri, although caring for Nobu as a friend, was supposed to be physically repulsed by him. In the book he was far more disfigured by war than simply a burn on his face (he was missing an arm for a start), and wasn't nearly as sympathetic a character as he was in the film. Also, the nature and depth of Sayuri's love for the Chairman wasn't made clear, but almost trivialised into a schoolgirl crush.
Perhaps the adaptation's greatest loss is Arthur Golden's meticulous detail of Japanese culture and the complexity of life of as a geisha. The book gave me such a rich understanding that the film could not even begin to. To view the film without having read the book would, in my opinion, deliver a very shallow version of what Golden had intended.

Last night for the first time I saw The Shining. Holy crap! how good is this movie, it was much scarier than any 'scary' movie I had seen before. The story was great and it was genuinley freaky. I also noticed about a million things in the movie that had been parodied on the Simpsons. I thought it was great, **** 1/2.

Watched Saw today and loved it. The only regret I have is that I didn't see it before #2 came out in the cinema. I would have been down there in a flash otherwise.

Don't you think it gets a little repetitive? For me one season is enough, because the gags are pretty much the same from show to show.

......
I read a rather interesting article on this recently where the woman who allegedly provided the crucial insight into Golden's representation of Japanese culture and the life of geisha's, Mineko Iwasaki, was interviewed. She denounced the book and the author and even sued Golden, settling out of court. She claims that she spoke to him of her life from childhood and into becoming a geisha with the strict understanding that whatever she told him was kept confidential, something he denies, and that the book represents geisha's as little more than prostitutes. Perhaps she renigged after experiencing disapproval and disgrace amongst fellow geisha's because she and the author have very different opinions as to how things panned out.

Over the past 5 days I watched the first 13 episodes of 'Prison Break' and oh my god it is one of the best TV shows I have ever seen!!!
If anyone is tossing up whether to watch it or not when it starts next Wednesday, DEFINATELY watch it!
Does anyone know why episode 14 doesn't air until the 20th March?! That's almost 4 months since episode 13 aired. And it is such a cliffhanger!

Just got back from Underworld Evolution.
Not baaaad, but nothing jaw-dropping (well, apart from Kate's body of course ;)).
I give it 6.5 out of 10

Would you say Kate's body makes it worth the price of the ticket?

In my case yes because it was a free ticket :D
I would rate it a see-on-tightass-Tuesday movie, or in DVD terms, a buy-exrental-or-wait-for-it-to-drop-to-$15

Brilliant show indeed - the next episode doesn't air for many months because "24" wanted its timeslot back, and Fox didn't want to move a successful show from its successful timeslot.

Stuff this season of 24, even though it seems like the best yet.
Couldn't they have moved Prison Break to another day but at the same timeslot?
The brother is stuck in the medical room while the others are below.
Can't wait to see how they meet with each other again.

They could have moved it to a new day, new timeslot, whatever they wanted. They didn't want to.

More often than not it's proved to be the downfall of shows in the U.S when they start stuffing about with time slots. :)

It seems to be the downfall of shows here. I used to be an avid Charmed fan, but they keep changing which day it's on, and the time slot it plays.
I just stick to getting them on DVD now, I need reliability with my tv viewing habits!

I find that is part of the fun :)
In the last show however they do wrap up the story for a lot of the characters. They have some new characters also in this season, I reckon "Ting-Tong" is a classic.
