Another late night / early morning with a Larry Cohen movie: this time, Hell Up in Harlem, the sequel to Black Caesar. After having a nervous immediacy and captivating opening scenes, the tone wavers and the film loses its focus becoming almost just another violent, caricaturish black action movie, despite Cohen's style. Sadly, it somewhat lacks the dimension of the first film.

Last night I watched Running On Karma (thankgod it was R0)....

A very different type of film, which seemed to cross several genre's whilst never leaving you in one long enough to get the full feel. The film wasn't the greatest until the ending, when it put most of it into perspective, and tried to teach the value of forgiveness, or some similar crap. Will be worth another watch, but I don't know how long it will stay in my collection for.

I watched Monster a few days ago, and it panned out excellent. The acting was very good, and Charlize Theron defiantly deserved the Oscar®. Her appearance change for the character was quite remarkable.

Just watched the r4 2-disc of Schindler's List. This is truly an extraordinary film, to be both a harrowing depiction of the most abominable inhumanity and to yet emerge as a transcendent vision of the triumph of an irrepressible conscience. The character's transformation from war profiteer into a "righteous man" aware of his responsibility to humanity amidst its horrific erosion ultimately turns this film away from its despair into as close to a positive view of human capability as the sobering awareness of recent history allows. There is so much to this remarkable film - and in intent and execution it is a powerful movie experience.

An incidental trip to the local library earlier this afternoon also made for a nice find, a book called "Witness-the Making of Schindler's List" which should prove a nice complementary read: it also had some intriguing colour stills of the black and white movie (if anyone doubted that black and white was the right choice in this case).
