I enjoy due to the friendship theme running throughout. What they have to do to each other to survive, and how each student takes on the situation differently.
Also, I love violence in a film. And there is plenty of that to enjoy.
I LOVE Battle Royale! It was very touching and horrific. I cried twice while watching it...and I love the musical score. This movie is one of the best movie I've seen. The acting was top notch for such young age. :)
I don't know why people would give it a thumb down... :(
If you haven't seen it yet...go and watch it! A true viewing pleasure.. ;)

It seems Battle Royale is a love it or hate it movie.
I was originally put off by a couple of reviews I read and so I haven't seen it yet. Siliegrrl says that it was flat and boring but doesn't mention the violence aspect which according to some people is really over the top, it looks like I'll just have to see it for myself.
Meanwhile, I watched Life of Brian and as much as I love that movie, I was very disappointed with the quality of the video.
The dvd looked no better than my old VHS tape, surely they should be able to produce a better copy than that for such a great movie.
BTW it was the region 1 Criterion Collection edition.

Yeah your just a sick puppy :dD
Well you can add me to the sick puppy list, because I loved "Battle Royale" as well ( have it in my collection )
mind you I do like Japanese/Korean horror films and (almost) anything by Takashi Miike.

So true. I find it to be a very emotional film
specially when the 2 girls at the start say "You'll always be my friend", and then they are dead which each others weapons, and they have the flash back.. Gut wrenching stuff
Battle Royale is great, but i couldn't get into Battle Royale 2 at all...is it just me?

I haven't gone for BR II.. From what I have read it lacks the magic of the first one

Last night I watched Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris.
I get so much more out of this film each time. I went back to listen to the commentary about the ending, and that just created alot more questions, and fewer answers. But the intrigue and mystery of it, draws you in everytime, and I'm already looking forward to my next viewing of this extraordinary film.

Everytime I walked pass this at Blockbuster, I think about buying it (I'm banned from renting in NSW), is it really that good? Some reviews gave it a thumb down.
Last night I watched Double Vision from Taiwan. A really tragic and creepy story. It was very emotional with a touch of horror as well. But half of the time I was concentrating on the sceneries. I've been to Taipei, so it was good to refresh my memories. :)

JV - you might be thinking of the reviews for the recent remake of Solaris starring George Clooney. That movie pales compared to the original Solaris.
Tsar is referring to the original, from 1972. A CLASSIC

Yup.. Once you see the original, you realise this is the only version. Soderburgh can burn in hell for his effort..
I was there when they were shooting the movie in Taipei, my friend is an extra (one of the people wearing white during the ceremony).
Not one of the best horror movies around but still good enough for me to keep it in my collection :)

I almost bought it the other day, just wanted to compare it with the Russian one, is the remake really that bad?

Gaia,
I bought it cheap ex-rental for $10, and seriously I wouldn't want to pay anymore than that for it.
An okay flick, IF you have never seen the original. Just my opinion - I'm not an afficiando of fine film or anything :o

Yeah it is..
If you've not seen the original, or rate it as one of the greatest films ever you make like it, but if you cherish Tarkovsky's version, then don't check at Soderbugh's as it will just piss you off

I just watched The Passion Of The Christ .It's a brutal and unrelenting movie and you have to applaud a movie comming out of hollywood system that dosen't pull the punches but at the end i just have one question. Why??? Why was it made? What's the point?I'm really left scratching my head as to why you would make a movie with such a narrow focus and in such a one dimesional way.It dosen't seem much of a strech to me to portray jesus as really good and his killers as really bad.Thats it,thats the entire movie folks!!!If you where looking for something deeper than that then your sh!t out of luck!!!I'm not saying don't watch it,far from it i say everyone watch it and make up your own minds. For me i have to say it comes accross as one of those nazi propaganda films, not enough balance for my liking.
Personally i think our mel is losing the plot. How can you go from Braveheart to this?Because this is just a snapshot taken with a microscope of a blink in human history.

Well seriously Eric whats he going to do make Jesus have bad qualities to his personality to make it a bit more different???? That would then miss the whole point of him being without sin in the first place.
