i was informed that dreambox manufacture a particular model unit that will decode satelite tv without the use of a gold or silver card, and thus one can view satelite tv at home.

which model is this?

and is it true that such a unit exists? because if so, it will mean that one can view satelite tv for ever without having to update their gold cards etc.

Yes it is true but that does not mean you can just plug it in and receive anything. Some Linux programmers have written emulators so you don't need a card but you still need to provide to the emulator the information that would normally be held on the card.
Have a look at www.dreambox.net.au for info about the Dreambox.

You will still need valid subscriber details, and the computer skills to
know how to load them.
