With the Aussie dollar doing well it is now time to buy myself a chrissy
present.
Can someone in "simple" terms explain the difference between the
photocal and the optical software so I can work out if it is worth the
extra. Has any one got experience with them???
Thanks
Brenton

I think they are sold in Aus by Kayell and they have something about
photocal/optical on their website.

I bought the GretagMacBeth EyeOne Display instead :-)

If you spend less than you earn, you'll never be in debt.
It seems that the PhotoCal software is a light version of OptiCal

Yep. I have Optical, which includes Photocal. Basically, the major
difference is that Optical gives you absolute measurements, giving you a
more precise result (if you're willing to take the extra time
calibrating), & making it possible to match multiple monitors to the
same standard. I've used both, & I prefer the results from Photocal.
PS: The best price I found for the Spyder & Optical S/W was from B&H in
the USA. Local prices were way higher at the time.

If you (or anyone interested) live in Canberra, I'd be happy to go
halves in buying one of these. It seems ridiculous for lots of people
to own their own when the good ones are expensive and you would only
use it every month or two or three. In fact I wonder if any of the
photo clubs own one, that would be a sensible idea ... must check this
out.

Brenton,
To be totally honest with you I wouldn't waste your money on the Spyder. I
have one (with Optical/Photocal) and the resultant profiles are pretty
crappy (i.e Probably not as good as using your eye and adobe gamma). I
would 100% support Miccullen and get the Gretag EyeOne. I now use one of
those and the profiles are perfect.

The Eye-One display is about the same price as the Pantone (was Colorvision)
Spyder (US$250) and operates virtually the same. I find the profiles to be
a LOT better, especially in the neutrals. I use a G520 Sony, a Matrox G550
and the Eye-One with great results.

If you're getting results no better than using Adobe Gamma, you're most
likely doing something very wrongly. I recommend thoroughly reading the
online doc's.

Thanks for your tip but I was doing it right. Maybe my definition of a
great profile is different to yours?

Well, that's certainly possible. Still, while I'm quite willing to
accept that the Spyder isn't the best screen profiler on the market,
it'd have to be really, really bad to be any worse than Adobe Gamma + a
pair of eyes, no matter how good those eyes may be.

Maybe I was stretching it a bit there... :-)
