NEWS Corporation was yesterday given approval to acquire DirecTV, the
biggest satellite television provider in the US.

The Federal Communications Commission and anti-trust enforcers in Washington
approved the $9.2 billion acquisition by the media group, the owner of News
Ltd (publisher of the Sunday Herald Sun) in Australia and 20th Century Fox
movie studios and the Fox Broadcasting Network in the US.
DirecTV, with 12 million subscribers, is the chief rival to cable
television.

The FCC approval came with conditions, including allowing cable rivals to
screen programs by News Corporation stations, as they do now. It also
ordered the new owner to offer local channels in more markets......

will be interesting to see if there are any positive flow-on effects to
