View Full Version : Thomson is dead

My STB that is, not the company, but I wouldn't be surprised if the latter
eventually happens. I was an early adopter, getting my box in early 2000, so
I expected a few bugs, and I got them. The damn box gave me audio pops all
the time (despite good analog reception), froze every time I changed to
channel seven and just decided to hang every few weeks, needing a power off
reset.
The sad thing is I haven't rushed out and bought a new one. I'm a bit
disappointed that it only lasted 3 years, so another Thomson is out of the
question. Can anyone recommend an SD unit that has good reception (I'd get
occassional signal loss with the Thomson) and costs $300 or less?

wait and get the new foxtel digital service. They supply the unit, which means if anything goes wrong they come and fix it. They're promising all their channels will be digital as well.

By far the best set top box used by antenna technicians such as myself is the emtec STB. It retails for $490 and is popular because it has the most stable TV picture. I'd also advise that digital TV and analogue TV are completely different as different channels are used 6,8,11,12,29 (in melbourne) which is different to analogue. I'd also advise that anything is probably an improvement on the original Thomson unit.
Stay clear from cheap rubbish and you'll get results. Also consider the aerial you have. There's also a lot of junk out there as well as a lot of systems which don't work well with digital.

An 'Antenna technician', how very err pathetic. You sound like you're
part of some elite group who sit around and discuss the technical merits
of digital electronics, rather than a sad tosser who erects antennas.
You do realise oh esteemed 'Antenna Technician', that what you've said
is so infinitely obvious that it was hardly worth your time writing it,
except for the fact that emtec are severly overpriced, and totally
unremarkable.
Do enjoy climbing up buildings and bolting antennas into place, there's
a good chap.

I think you'll find that both 7 & 10 are yet to agree to allow their digital
signals to be aired by foxtel. So at this point you'll only get SBS, ABC &
9 etc on the new digital foxtel box.
