View Full Version : Sony vs. Samsung vs. LG 76cm Widescreen 100hz TV

Hi all,
I'm at the stage where I've looked at 4 or 5 brand of 76cm widescreen TV and am ready to buy.
I originally thought the Samsung was the way to go, but I went into a store today and had a look at the brands mentioned in the subject next to each other.
The Sony seemed a bit blocky/blurry. The Samsung seems to have this kind of pixel-sheen over peoples faces (only noticable on skin but since people make up a large proportion of what we watch it kinda matters!) and the LG, although it didn't appear as sharp as the Samsung, seemed the best of the three.
So just wanting some feedback from people about what they personally think is the better set, and in particular, if people have had good/bad experiences with the LG.
The order of what I'll be using the set for most:
- Console games
- DVD's (via component input)
- TV (via Foxtel)
I'm not fussed about the sound quality.
Feature and customisation (eg: customing picture, sharpness, color balance etc etc) is also quite important.
All three models have the inputs I need (except the Sony uses Scart which I don't like much).
Looking forward to and appreciate your feedback.

you should have had a fiddle with the tv's settings to ensuer they were the
same. TV's in department stores are most likely not setup to give optimal
picture quality, they wind the brightness and the contrast up and add a bit
of colour to make the picture look better. also what source was the picture
being fed from? component from an SD Digital TV box or standard analogue tv
tranmission?
Do all the TV's support Progressive component input? its not a necessity,
but its quite a handy feature to have to give the picture quality that
little bit extra.
There are always a lot of variables and you've obvoiusly gotta go with the
one you think shows the best picture for your liking, but for my opinion,
carefully compare them whlie viewing for a very clean source, dvd or SD/HDTV
to ensure you're making a good comparison.

Heya,
Yeah I shoulda given more info shouldn't I ;)
Ok, the Sony was $2000, the Samsung was $2600 and I think the LG was $2500 all roughly. The Samsung and LG I can get down to about $2200.
They were all being fed an in-store DVD via RF (and I certainly wont be using RF, I'll be using Foxtel for TV, S-Video for consoles and Component for DVD), but I asked them to put my DVD on so I could compare something I'd actually watch.
All 3 sets had the required inputs. The LG has fewer colour/sharp/etc features, while the Samsung had the most (but also a shimmery picture).
I'm not sure about the progressive capabilities of the sets, will look into that online...
Funnily enough, I found a Philips last night in another store for $2700 and it looked slightly better than all the above 3... it has quite an extensive menu/customisation system... but I'd always thought to stear clear of Philips?! Am I wrong? Because it looked pretty good.

Yes, the Samsung (assuming it's the WS32A10) can be had pretty much
anywhere for $2200. I've heard of people getting them for $2000.
The price includes a stand.

I have the Samsung, haven't noticed any problem with the picture.
You do need to adjust it a bit when you first get it, but that's
true for pretty much all sets.
>I'm not sure about the progressive capabilities of the sets, will look
>into that online...
The Samsung at least does progressive.
One thing to note, though, is that I made the mistake of hooking my
DVD player up to the second component input. Works nicely in progressive,
but the TV can't scale a progressive signal down to 4:3 and my player
won't pad 4:3 content to 16:9, so I have to turn progressive off for
4:3 material. And that second input seems to be a bit flakey when
run interleaved.
Moved the player over to the first set and so far so good.
Also, the Samsung uses grey bars in 4:3 mode. It looks a bit weird
at first -- I'd have preferred black -- but I've gotten used to it
now and it doesn't bug me any more.
Overall I'm pretty happy with it.

I would not be concerned about Philips quality as 'inside' info
says....."very reliable".
Have you looked at Toshiba? Don't know about their tubed sets
however I have had a 50" rptv for around three years and I have had no probs
at all. Everyone comments on the clarity of this unit.
I'm giving this to my son as I turn 60 soon and I am shouting myself
the 57" rptv Tosh.
Originally I would never have though of the Toshiba brand but for
the fact that my 'source' informed me that Tosh are going "all out" to
improve the 'image' side of home theatre.

I picked up the WS32A10 a few days ago and am generally happy with it. I
have one concern though - there seems to be a line of brightness at the top
of the image across the length of the screen. It is particularly noticable
when the image is black for instance the black screen between scenes in Law
and Order. It is like there is a light globe behind the screen and it is
peeking over the edge.
Has anyone else noticed this?

I haven't had that sort of problem. Are you using the internal tuner?
Are you seeing that sort of thing when viewing material from an external
source, e.g., a DVD player?
One thing I have noticed is that when viewing the output from my
Teac DVB-300 digital set-top box I get occasional blue "flashes".
I don't see it with output from anything else (I have a DVD player
and a HTPC hooked up to the set as well), so I'm assuming the STB
is to blame for this.

OK I've narrowed the problem down a bit. The output from DVD looks OK.
It's only when taking the signal from the DGTEC HD set top box so I will
have to do some googling on that. Turning the brightness and contrast right
down alleviate it but it is still noticeable.
I have it connected from set top box --> amp --> TV and tested direct from
set top box --> TV, both via componant. Same image.

I have a Toshiba, have had it for 4 and a half years, I have had absolutly no problems at all, clear picture, great sound.
my advice would be GET A TOSHIBA, you wont regret it!!!
Have a look at the newe Sony 76cms if your budget can stretch to a bit over 3 grand. The super fine pitch KVHR32 looks very sweet. I've seen it for around $3400 at JB but I'm sure you could pick it up cheaper if you were willing to extend your budget a bit. I'm not sure about the picture in the other model without super fine pitch but its RRp is about $2700.
