Okay, why the hell would they release a HDTV set with no inbuilt tuner ?

Well seeings how the DGtec 2000a is down to $599 RRP, I would say it would
be $3400 without the STB.

That's a piss poor excuse, if I buy an analogue set, it has an analoge
tuner. IF I buy a car, I have a engine, SDTV is anathema and a quasi step
from analogue to HD using current sets (can you even buy a genuine "SDTV" ?
) but a HDTV should have a HD tuner, a 1/2 decent design would I imagine
have a tuner that slots in to suit our market and a differnt tuner for the
Yankee market etc ie like a PC expansion board with a vacant slot in the
back, if/when demands becomes great then it might make more sense to have
an entire IC for the tuner built into the Mobo..

yes it might seem bad to you but that's how it is, so deal with it and
get over it, because.....
HD set top boxes from dgtec , the panasonic and toshiba are made
essentially from the same 2 companies in korea....so at the moment
the only way is to buy (usually the dgtec) for the hdtv as nobody else
has made one that works properly yet.

alot easier to manufacture and our hd tv system is unique.
similar to usa except interlaced 50 frames not 60.
and our method of hd transmission is superior to the usa (goes further
distances) but as a result it is different...
small market + early days + unique system to this country only = few
available boxes.

yes as our sdtv is similar to europe/uk, sony has had a fully
intergrated sdtv now 32"widescreen for over a year and it's less than
3 grand. ...and i think panasonic has one too.

nice thought but nobody's done it yet, except for a stupid pc hdtv
card with many faults.....
e.g.1) every hour it stops recording for 5 seconds,
or 2) if you change the channels quickly it freezes up until you
reboot the computer,
or 3) if you go from a dolby digital station to a stereo one then back
to the dolby digital station it wont lock back on as dolby digital
(only stereo) and a possible computer reboot is required.
and nobody has bothered to fix these and several other program bugs in
the computer hdtv software.
anyway the set will cost more with an add on hdtv card, but since you
can get cheap hdtv boxes the end cost is for a cheaper set without the
hdtv card and a cheap hdtv add on box....therefore the end result is
much the same, except you have one extra box on your shelf...big deal.
sounds like you're yet to have digital tv in your house yet.

I agree that it would be great to have an inbuilt HD tuner, but I think the
reason why they are not included is that Australia has a unique HD
transmission system which differs to other markets, and due to Australia's
small market manufacturers do not think it is worth while integrating an HD
tuner.
The SD system is extremely similar to the UK market, although we use VHF and
UHF while they only use UHF, and as such there are many SD boxes, and
integrated digital sets from Panasonic and Sony. I have a Panasonic SD STB,
which looks like it was originally for the UK market, being built in the UK
and frequent references throughout the manual of "FreeView" as the system is
called over there.
It is interesting to note that the SD box is labelled Panasonic, and has
references to the parent Matsushita company, while the HD box is labelled
"Distibuted by Panasonic", and further backs the theory that these are
rebadged units built in the Korea.
But yeah, I agree 100% with you Trevor, and a common expansion board would
make a lot of sense as you say similar to PCI cards. Hopefully with time
things will change.

Yes you're right, it does and being how it is is not an excuse for
continued poor practice
> so deal with it and get over it, because.....
or not deal with it, protest thats it's a poor excuse and refuse to
purchase because of that, or capitulate like you seem to have done and make
excuses for poor practice.
>sounds like you're yet to have digital tv in your house yet.
LOL I am yet to get digital transmission in my area !
I have no problems in selling external tuners for the plethora of analoge
devices out there (eg VHS, TV, DVD recorder etc) and for projectors,
Plasmas etc but to sell a "HDTV" with OUT a tuner is inexcusable IMO, no
matter what positive spin nor excuse you make for them.
The accepted norm with a TV is that you have a tuner included.

I am sure that is the reason they give, accepting it as an "excuse" is
another matter.

Agreed, I can understand the problem with differing standards around the
world. There seems to be two ways to handle it.
1. a slot in tuner for the set ie different contry, different tuner card
2. not including a tuner at all and relying on the customer to supply their
own.
2 is unacceptable IMO
That being said people can buy whatever they want.
