View Full Version : New Digital Agregation

From correspondence from the ABA:
"In October last year, the Government passed amendments to the legislation
which allowed the ABA to determine a date by which the existing licensees in
a two station commercial television market such as Mildura could apply for
an additional licence (the legislation relating to digital, not analog).
The date the ABA determined is 19 January 2004, from which the licensees
have 90 days to notify of their intentions. As the legislation allows either
or both licensees, individually or as a joint venture of the two licensees
to apply to provide a third digital service in the market, should the ABA
receive notification of interest from each of the licensees, allocation of
the licence for a third service would be by a price based system. The 90 day
period is for providing notification of intention, there is allowance for
applying for the actual licence within one year from 19 January 2004."
Or in other words, players in two commercial station markets have until mid
March to make bids for a third licence. This will hopefully mean digital Ten
in Mildura/Sunraysia, Darwin and Griffith/MIA by the start of 05.

If country areas can have an extra commercial tv station on digital,
then capital cities should also be able to have more commercial
channels on digital
(even if it means existing operators such as 7, 9 , 10 do it, this is
better than the current pathetic abysmal choice of only 3 commercial
tv channels)
In Christchurch NZ, a city with a population less than Canberra there
are *eight* FTA tv channels.....
This leaves Australia looking rather pathetic when a city the size of
Sydney (with four million people) has only 3 commercial
channels.........
A frickin' disgrace (and we want *more* tourists to come here !!!)
Why bother ?!?!?

Don't disagree with your argument - just the conclusion. Do you honestly
think a potential tourist gives a monkey's about how many FTA channels there
are?

One/2/3/Prime = NZ versions of pretty much the same content as we get in AU
except they have NZ local stuff instead of AU local stuff.
C4 = Music channel.. OK, that's good.
CTV = Christchurch local channel padded mostly with rebroadcasted DWTV &
Bloomberg. Pass.
What are the other two?
> A frickin' disgrace (and we want *more* tourists to come here !!!)

um, there isn't enough content now on 3 commercial channels to warrant
another channel. Do you have any common sense? We still have more choices
that the British and we are a lot smaller in population. Do your sums first
before coming on here with your bull shit lies.

Mr packer and 'mafia' friends control the tv business always claiming,
"we will loose billions" if you let more FTA on.
Hopefully the USA FTA agreement forces more FTA chans on too, or that KP
retires 6feet under.

And they have less local stuff than we do. Prime has none.

TAB Trackside - Horses and greyhounds
Shine TV - Christian
Channel 39 is an amatuer TV repeater.
The Polytechnic also has a licence it's not using, there may be others.

The British have Freeview (www.freeview.co.uk). They also have five national
analog networks, plus community TV in places, like here.
As for the population argument, that's bogus, just look at NZ. Population is
mainly only important when it comes to determining the feasible amount of
local content - not number of stations. NZ again backs this assertion up.

I always enjoy seeing local TV when travelling - the local programmes and
continuity anyway. Although now with the internet, I can do a lot of that
from home...

The extra channel they are getting only brings it up to the same number the
rest of us get (country and capitals).
It's not as though they are going to get more channels than us...... for the
first time they will have the SAME as the rest of us.
Be grateful you weren't in the same position and had to live with only 1 or
2 stations for the past 40-odd years.

Is is true that the analog tx signals will
be turned off in 2008 ?
How can the ABA expect us all to have digital
teles by then ?
Talk about forcing technology on people
I just bought a new friggin tv

No, it's a target date neither set in stone nor legislated.. And only for
the major cities, for the regionals the target is 2012.

Even so there'll be hundreds of second hand set-top boxes on Ebay for $10 by
then. I wouldn't worry. Besides, just how long do you expect your new TV to
last?

Set Top Boxes will be in CornFlakes packets by then, just like some DVD
players are now ;-)

Well, my parents have a colour TV from 1975 that is still working perfectly :)
So, I think at least 25 years is a reasonable expectation :P

Hate to break it to you but it's not 1975 any more.

God, I hope someone at Channel 10 bids for the new digital licence in
Mildura. Have only had Prime and SBS for the last 5 or 6 years.....Anywhere
on line to write to? Southern Cross or Network10?

Reread the quote posted. Only Win, Prime or both acting together can run
Mildura's third commercial station under the rule in question. Contact
details for the local offices are in the phone book (paper and online).
If we're really unlucky, they could launch a 24/7 RTV (www.rtv.net.au) + TCM
(www.turnerclassicmovies.com) channel :-(
