View Full Version : Sony STR-DA50ES Question
Hi,i have just purchased a second hand STR-DA50ES and am having a little
problem. Does this model have DTS decoding? as my model doesnt. Ive scoured
the net and have even downloaded the manual(english-US)from Sony.com and
they all say it has DTS. My model doesnt even have the DTS license on the
rear or DTS symbol on the front which seems strange compared to what i have
read and seen on the net. My model also has 5.1 inputs which the US version
doesnt seem to have. Does anyone own/or have owned one and can confirm the
inclusion of DTS. Many thanks and your input will be much appreciated.
Cheers
Ardz :-)

Weird! My 50ES definitely decodes DTS. It has the DTS logo on the front and
everything! It even says 'DTS 5.1' on the front readout when the decoder kicks
in.

Hi Mabster, thanks for the reply. I have just got an email from Sony NZ
replying to my query. They say "this model never came with a DTS
decoder"....WTF?. Does your model have 5.1 inputs on the back as well as an
RDS tuner?. Cheers.

Sure does! I've never used RDS, but I use the 5.1 inputs with my DVD-A player.
You're in NZ? Maybe the NZ model is different?

Yeah,i have it on AFD(auto decode format) and DTS out is enabled on my DVD
player(works fine through a Millenium DTS decoder). I would have thought
that NZ/Aus pretty much had the same model. Looks like once again you guys
get all the good stuff :-). Seems strange though. Thanks again Mabster.

Ardz
Ardz,
I assume you selected the DTS sound track on the DVD menu, as it normally
defaults to DD.5.1 first?
John.

Mine was one of those 50 or 60 and it does play DTS but it also has a DTS
logo on the front panel, unlike the 50ES in question...

Thanks Guys,Trevor...yeah,i saw your website for the DA50ES as i was
googling around the net to find some info on it. I was thinking maybe its a
DA80ES that has been rebadged or something????. It has "DTS" on the actual
display(unlit of course)when i have a close look at it. All i can say is
strange. Ive definitely enabled DTS out on my DVD player and ive even tried
both coax and optical to see if that did anything. Cheers :-)
I'm pretty sure it doesn't have DTS onboard, but the 5.1 inputs will accept
any external 6-channel sound source such as a dedicated DTS decoder, DVD
player or even from your soundcard (if it is an Audigy or above).
Basically, if it hasn't got the DTS moniker on the amp, then it doesn't
decode DTS. Your STR-DA50ES must be almost 7-8 years old by now, I remember
this being the higher end of the models available back then.

I've got both the 50ES and the 80ES. It's easy to tell them apart (apart
from the obvious model number on the front), the 80ES has a motorised door
on the front panel and the 50ES's is manual. Beside that the remotes are
totally different as well with the 50ES having a LCD display (which is
horrible BTW...I use the 80ES's remote to control the 50ES).
I would like to give you one word of advise though about the 50ES..... it
runs VERY VERY HOT, especially when processing a digital signal even at
mediocre volume levels, it's not as bad when just listening to stereo music
for some reason. The 80ES also gets hot but not as bad as the 50ES, I have
heard of several 50ES actually going up in smoke. Just make sure it's in a
well ventilated spot and you'll be fine.
Pete.
