Mate!

This is probably a bit pointless, but what do you guys think the seagulls in
Finding Nemo are saying - Mine or Mate?

My girlfriend reckoned it was 'mine', but I convinced her (after 10 replays)
that it was 'mate'. I've since come across a huge debate at
http://eliot.landrum.cx/archives/2003/05/30/finding_nemo_the_great_minematemike_debate.php
(it goes for pages about this). Basically, most Aussies think that it's
'mate' while everyone else (i.e. the US) can't see how 'mate' makes sense,
and so it must be 'mine'.

There's a fan website dedicated just to the seagulls at
http://heyhowdeyhey.com/mine/,... but as you can see, they think it's 'mine'
as well, though they acknowledge they've coped a heap of aussie email
claiming that it's 'mate'.

I thought I was being clever by turning on 'subtitles for the hearing
impaired' and replaying the two gull clips. Bugger - they both come up as
'mine'. I still can't accept it. Sometimes it sounds like it could be
either, but other times, it's definitely 'mate' to my ears.

I wonder if this will ever be resolved? The guy who did the voice doesn't
even get a credit for it in the movie. If only he could be found...then we
would really know :)

Thanks mate, mate, mate!!!!!!!!!!

What's to resolve? The subtitles gave you your answer. 'Mine' makes perfect
sense in the context of seagulls fighting over food. 'Mate' doesn't make any
sense at all. I didn't even consider it as 'mate' until I read someone on the
net arguing about it.

I'm with you there..

Some people need to be introduced to cotton buds. Remove some of that wax
obviously blocking their ears..

I never thought it said "mine" until this post. I only heard "mate".

And saying "mate" does make sense. I don't remember the movie that well, but
I remember one seagull with food, and the others trying to get the food. If
you want to get food off someone else, you pretend to be their friend:
"Mate? (can I have some?)".

If the subtitles say "mine", then fair enough. But that doesn't seem as
funny as "mate" to me.

Can anyone tell me what point in the movie this occurs? The menu's are
painful to sift through because they take so damn long.

Since when? In my 33 years of life I've never said, or had said to me,
"Mate?" when someone wants some of my chips or food. For the record,
I heard it as "Mine!", as did my wife. The subtitles are the answer,
but I don't have the movie yet to check.

I think they are saying Mate, would prefer if they were - but am wrong
because they are saying Mine.

I agree - when I thought it was 'mate' I thought it was really funny, and
really aussie.

It is ambiguous in the audio, but the subtitles clarify it.

Just because you don't recall saying it, doesn't mean it doesn't make sense.
"aw, mate, come on", etc. I mean, does "Mine!" make sense? It doesn't
*belong* to the seagull, so it isn't his.

I'm not debating what is said, since if the subtitles say mine, then that's
what Pixar meant for it to say. But "mate" does make sense.

Bloody hell, here we go again. It's not the slightest bit ambigupus. I was
never in any doubt they were claiming the food as their own by shouting
"mine!". When you see cricketers claiming a catch do they shout "mate"????

Idiots. Get your ears checked.

When you have cricketers sitting around an esky full of beer and someone is
handing them out, do they shout "mine" or "mate"?

Neale

Go to 1:25:45 in the movie. It sounds like a hybrid of the two words. Either
"moyne" or "maaate".

Sure enough, the subtitles say "Mine".

I think both make sense, and people can hear whatever they want to hear.

Of course, if people want to be nazi's about it, feel free to keep arguing
about it.

Perfectly -- it's akin to any given ball-sports game where several
players call "mine!" when intending to catch the ball. The subtitles
will prove I'm right. :P

Exactly. Anyone who heard "mate" needs their ears cleaned -- LOL!

But not before the ball is in the air.

My point was that both "mate" and "mine" make as much sense as each other.

OK, I've spent enough time talking about this mediocre movie.

Nah, they are saying Nine!

(anything other than Mine just doesn't make sense... I don't know why there
has been so much debate about this!)
