View Full Version : HD on Foxtel Digital?
I assume if you go with Foxtel Digital, you're not going to get any HD
content. At least without stuffing around with switching receiver inputs on
you amp, most likely video inputs on your TV, just to switch to a HD STB
which you will have to buy separately.
Doubt I would spend money on both a HD STB, and a Foxtel subscription. It
would be one or the other, and I bought a high end CRT so I can take
advantage of at least some of the extra res HD will give when I got a STB
(eventually).

High definition is THE most important issue other than wide choice of
channel packages. Does anyone know the details?
How will Foxtel cope? The best way would be for the Foxtel box to be able to
receive & output HD to it's highest level. Each different HD version of a
channel should have it's own channel.

I doubt they will offer HD transmission. I haven't heard any talk of it and I seriously doubt that their cable and satellite infra-structure could cope with the high bandwidth required for HD. I think the best we could hope for is SD at full resolution.

Foxtel has no plans to offer HD. However, the U.S. experience suggest that
they will do it eventually (or someone will set up a satellite service to
provide HD content).
The FTA channels will only be for the primary channel in SD. Any other
channels being transmitted by the FTA channel will not be shown on Foxtel.
So you will miss out on extra camera angles, program guide etc.
If you want FTA HD or extra channels you still need a FTA Digital STB.

I know it has been a long time since anyone posted in here, but as I found this thread doing a search, others may find it as well and can thus use the information.
FoxTel are indeed going to introduce a HD service. I was on the phone to a FoxTel service consultant, complaining about some of the shortcomings of the IQ unit and he said that a new unit was being released early next year with 4 tuners that used MPEG-4 encoding and was designed specifically for their new HD service that is being released.
Add this to the new TenHD channel that is starting up soon (and I think Seven has one as well) with new content and I think finally HD is going to take off in Australia!
