Funny...I received an email from another guy who claims the company was sold
5 years ago...And that he and some other fellow had set themselves up in
another company called SubSonic.

Hi Jon and Paul,

Short answer is yes you are both right.

Richter is still alive, and yes it was sold a number of years ago.... AGAIN....

Brief longer answer.....

Richter was originally a privately owned company (as many are), which was bought out by API (Audio Products International Aust.) many many years ago.
After being extremely successful with the Richter 'Export Series' range, which included speakers such as the Harlequin, Dragon, Griffin, and the better known, Unicorn, Hydra, Evokator, as well as the multi award winning and huge selling Wizard, and Wizard MKII, among others. A number of years later API-A/Richter released a (so called) 'high end' Sovereign series and a (very) 'budget' series Predator series, which well didn't go so well for them. I believe this may have had something to do with API a few years ago selling the division off to Faze 4.

Faze 4 has been some what quite about this, and the brand kind of slipt away from the market, but has been recently brought back from the dead with a new series/line of speakers, I believe they are named 'The Legend' series.

You will find that many of the 'Export Series' names are being used once again, just in a MKIII prefix, but if you look closer you may find that this is about it, as far as the same system (Export v's new MKIII) goes.

I must admit I have not really given the new series much of a test run, as I am still enjoying all my old 'Export Series' MKII and MKI speakers. I also need to note, as good as the MKII boxes sound and perform for the money, and there were a lot of people that had problems with over driving and blowing drivers. This was not always the user fault nor was it always the fault of Richter or Audax (the main driver brand used in the MKII series), but in some cases a systems type mismatch.

The 'Export Series' was marketed and push in the Aust. market along side Yamaha, and therefore you will probably find a lot of the original owners were running Richter and Yamaha systems.

Since the good old days of the 'Export series' there has been a heap of changes with Richter as well as suppliers, such as ME electronics (previously the Audax disty for Aust) who is now unfortunately closed and a lot of the old retailers/agents are no longer selling the new products.

The comment or story you heard about some of the staff moving to Subsonic, is partly true, I believe 2 of the staff moved to, or started Subsonic, as to what they did at Richter is reported to be questionable (and im not meaning did they actually work or not, but more there actual role's) which I believe only one of them might be still actively working with Subsonic, this is probably best to ask them or API, or maybe even Faze 4, might be able to answer this one. (Sorry but im not 100% sure on all the details of this).

The new Richter can be contacted at
Richter Acoustics Pty Ltd
U45/ 176 South Creek Rd Dee Why 2099 (02) 9981 1844
or....
Faze 4 Pty Ltd
1a Monash Crs Clontarf 2093 (02) 9948 1999

You can check out a number of the new product range at:

www.lenwallisaudio.com

or direct link.....

An old hidden company outline can be found here:

I have been unable to find a website for Richter/Faze4, as I don’t think either of the companies divisions have one as yet.

Hope this helps.

If you have any more questions, please feel free to contact me.

Hi,

The Richter Wizards were the first Australian made speaker I ever heard back
in the late 80's. To me they represented such hope in a home-grown aussie
made quality alternative to the over-priced European speakers of the time.

It's a shame to see them lose their sales channels like this. It's also a
shame to see that their current owners don't even deem the name/brand worthy
enough of a dedicated website.

RN

PS: I always reckoned that becuase of their in your face sound they were
very popular with young people, the music of those times (at least amongst
my friends) was rock like Cold Chisel and Midnight Oil amongst many others.
All of this high volumne requirments coupled with the type of music and
'budget' amplifiers mean overdriving and dirty power. This was purely based
through my musings on a past life though!
