View Full Version : Yamah amp and increased sub response mystery - help!

I have an RXV-596 Yamaha receiver and when I switch the surrounds off
(effect off) to listen to just the 2 front speakers for stereo music
listening etc...I've noticed (and measured) a very high boost to the
subwoofer signal from the LFE out channel. The level of the left and right
channels are not affected at all, just the subwoofer output.
I've tested the satellite and sub levels from a test disc (running PCM
stereo and DD stereo in 5:1 mode) and the levels are all fine but
unfortunately when I play a standard CD the amp goes in prologic mode so
I've got to switch the surrounds off to get stereo and I get the increased
bass response from the sub.
I hope someone can solve this mystery and suggest a possible solution and/or
workaround, short of manually turning the sub down everytime I want to
listen to a CD :-) Also what is causing this?
cheers

Check to see if all your main speakers are set to small and not large. If
they are set to large, the bass gets directed towards them and not towards
the subwoofer (except the .1 LFE channel).

All speakers are set to 'small' and sub is set to 'both' (as it states in
the manual for playback of 2 channel sources). Just to paraphrase the issue;
in 5:1 the sub level is spot on, but when I switch the surrounds to 'off'
(and just use the L+R speakers for stereo listening) the level of the sub
from the LFE output rises sharply. Any explanation and/or workarounds will
be appreciated.

If the speakers are 'small', you shouldn't be setting the LFE to 'both'
- should be sub only.
Try that.

Try playing a 2 channel source, and set the sub level using the volume knob on the subwoofer itself, do not adjust this setting again. Next play a 5.1 source and set the sub level using the receivers' sub vol setting.
This should solve your probs.
