View Full Version : Newbie question re STB to VCR

Hi,
I need some help as to how i would go about connecting a standard digital
STB to VCR and cant really find an answer in the various FAQs ive seen.
Am considering the new teac dvb400 which looks good at $300, it has rf loop
and RCA outputs - can these be connected straight into the relevant inputs
on a standard VCR without any problems? I mostly tape shows rather than
watch them when
they are broadcast so its a pretty important consideration for me.
Also I know that vcr tape would be analog so no digital sound, that is cool,
I'm mainly concerned about the visual quality.
Any info greatly appreciated.
thanks
Stewart

yes.
but there is one problem ... channel changing.
the VCR can't change the channel that the STB is tunned to. therefore you
either have to set the STB to the channel you want manually, or have a STB
that has a timer that gives you this functionality.

Thanks Louis,
I think I can live with this, guess no more time recording on the vcr but oh
well.

New to the game myself, so I could be set up wrong and I have a Strong, so
substitute Scart for RCA (I think). I've connected antenna to RF in on STB,
RF out to VCR RF in, Scart 1 to TV and Scart 2 to VCR AV in. This allows me
to operate the VCR as we are used to, unclude timer recording and channel
changing, but the signal is straight analogue. Using AV gives the situation
Louis decribed, plus you couldn't watch one show while taping another.
However the up side is they told me on this forum that it actually tapes the
DIGITAL output, so presumbly would result in a better playback. Mind you,
not everyone who answers question here knows what they're talking about. I'm
living Proof :-) I haven't tried it yet, so can't confirm.
Hope this helps.

I was looking at that one today at Good Guys ($279), but the sales guy
said there were some problems with it & a few had been returned. I
bought the older model (dvb300) - $249 but got it for $220 cash
(apparently was $350 recently?).
Works fine & I've hooked it up to my TV Tuner card on PC & record that
way. Haven't tried to record through VCR but I'll have a go
tomorrow...
Good Guys usually knock off a few bucks for cash, so you could
probably get it for $249.......?

Hey Steve,
Picked up a dgtec model in the end, and pretty well followed what you
describe here, except
used rgb connections instead of scart on STB to VCR AV connections.. Works a
treat, tried taping
a few things on vcr and playback looks great. Maybe it is a digital signal
being replayed on the tape, dont
know (would have thought its analogue though) but its pretty close quality
to how playback looks straight off
the STB box on the s-video input on the telly..

ta for the advice, see my post above I actually grabbed the dgtec dh200
(think thats the model no)
for $260 from JB, the clincher was that the teac only had scart and standard
RCA output
whereas the dgtec had s-video as well as two rca outputs, scart and
progressive. All good except
for some very odd reason the supplied batteries for the remote didn't work,
had to steal a set out
another remote..
