I have an Australian Model Grundig Cinaro Widescreen Digital TV (MFW 82-5310/8 SDTV).

I am being moved by my company to Houston, USA.

If I take my TV with me, will it work in the USA if I run it through a step-up transformer to 240v. The manual claims that the unit supports NTSC signals.

If the TV won't work natively on the US system, is there a cheap workaround (eg, running it through an american VCR?). I only bought the TV 6 months ago and it seems a waste to sell it off if I don't have to.

Any ideas?

my guess ... yes.
but ask Grundig Australia (or a retailer or distributer of Grundig)

The digital tuner will not work in the USA.
The analog might. Maybe.

Sure, if it takes NTSC, the VCR will work fine.
But don't they all have cable over there? A cable box with composite
output should do the job.

don't forget you could have problems with the display due to a change in the
hemisphere you are in. I'm not sure if it is still a problem, or if the
electronic counters for it now, but you used to have Northern Hemisphere
sets, and southern sets.

The earths magnetic differences in both hemispheres effects CRTs and so
could screw up your image taking a southy to the north.

The following link, although a bit old, has some useful info about the differences between OZ and US digital transmissions:

If you're not going to live in the US indefinately, don't bother taking the
grundig - you can buy a very cheap (but nice) telly to use while you're
there. Having been in a similiar position to you in the past, next time I
would only take a small bag of clothes, my laptop and then buy anything else
I wanted to have locally in america. If your company is providing
accommodation, it will be fully kitted out with stuff too.
I brought back a couple of tv's back from america to australia, and found
they had severe magnetic distortion/discolouration. Several treatments with
a degaussing wand almost fixed the problem, but they've never been quite the
same.
Have fun on your travels!

fyi - to get the usa tellies to work here, we had to get step-down
transformers (much cheaper to buy in the us), and then we had to get around
the problem of the tv tuner, and ntsc only playback. The cheapest solution
was a rather expensive Samsung SV-5000w vcr, which does true signal
conversion and has a worldwide tuner. The picture via the vcr is average. I
have wondered if any australian digital set top boxes can output in ntsc?
Maybe that would be a better solution.

I have two monitors that I brought back from the US several years ago.
Neither have suffered any ill-effects from being "upside down" in the
southern hemisphere's magnetic field.

I would see the problem in terms of receiving a TV signal from the local
stations. If you can connect from a cable-box to the TV then that will
solve the problem for you.

That having been said, I am always surprised how cheap TV sets are in
the US.

Geoff
