hey all,

Whats the best idea or recommendation to connect up a DG5000i, DVDV70
(or 80) and
a LCD monitor with 1280x768 native resolution (is this enough for hdtv?)

ie. Do I have to pass through either or will that degrade from one to
other, or is
it best to have both of the outputs go to separate inputs on the monitor
as the
monitor has S-video and DVI,

Can S-Video really handle HDTV ?

Anyone got channel 31 in perth as sdtv from a hdtv set top box ?

Any much difference between dvdV70 and DVDV80 by Samsung for recording
and playback,

Any VHS system able to record hdtv signal ?

Any dvd players that can play a hdtv mpeg-2 file - I can do this on a PC
from
the microsoft site but only just with a 2G athlon, any dedicated players
that
can go this resolution and frame rate ?

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/content_provider/film/ContentShowcase.aspx

Or is it too early to try to conenct these things before analog bites
the dust in 3 years ?

1280x768 is greater than 720x576i (PAL & SD), and therefore it is HD.
but not the full level that HD can reach ...

I dont think 31 is on digital anywhere in aus yet.

no. VHS is less then even SDTV in quality.

OK, I guess well see monitors eventually that do the true 1920 x 1200,
there's a 24 inch one from Samsung, which I might get at easter but
seems I need to upgrade my pc to watch real hdtv, rf and dvd...

Yeah thats what I guessed, so separate inputs with an RF splitter,

Cant work out which is the best one, component, rgb or dvi ?

Ah ! Well why dont Samsung state in their spec that you dont get hdtv
signal from s-video - even if its a short cable, and sales people say
its only marginal difference between s-video and component ?

Have people seen much real difference - especially with short cables ?

Ok true, but I noticed sbs has more channels plus 10 and 9 seem to
have the 1080 format - funny that channel 7 is so far behind the times !

Where does that put S-VHS ?

I guess I should look at putting the video output also into a video capture
card on the PC, still want to make it simple for rest of family...

from best to worst ...
DVI, VGA, Component (both RGB & YUV flavours are very similar), S-Video,
Composite, RF
Note: although VGA contains RGB singals, it is not the same as Component
RGB, as VGA has it's sync on seperate lines, making it better.

S-VHS is nearer to SD then VHS, but I gather it is still not there. maybe
you should look at a PVR unit. (ie, a STB with a HDD in it)

Ok I ended
up doing the antenna input to the DG5000i which has the antenna out going
to the samsung dvd/vcr/tuner antenna in. DG5000i has component out to the
monitor's
BNC inputs through RCA to BNC adaptors. DVD/vcr tuner's output through
composite to the video 1 inout on the monitor. The monitors Video 1 output
goes
to the Aux input on the DG5000i...Naturally I have the audio leads doing the
same general routing. The wires on the back do look a bit weird in they
go back and forth from monitor to dgtec but it works ok, only a couple of
button presses to go from hdtv to dvd with matching audio, no plug changes :)

This allows me to do a pip with the dg5000i which shows its aux input from the

dvd/vcr in the bottom right corner whilst I can watch a 1080i hdtv broadcast
from the dg5000i. To watch a dvd fullscreen I need to switch the monitor's
input from
component (bnc) to video 1. but the good thing is I dont need to mess around
changing aspect ratios on either the dgtec or dvd/vcr/tuner - all works sweet
:)

If I get around to it I could also use the pip of the monitor as well to show
rgb in
from a PC or some other tuner maybe, and move this pip window to say bottom
left
whilst leaving pip from dgtec (aux) on bottom right - what for I dont know
(yet).

The only area of contention is family has 3 remotes to wrestle over, grrrrrr

hrrrrmmm

Prob is though, whats an easy way to swap audio around without
swapping video, because at moment dgtec pip is only audio on
primary channel never on aux input :(( sob sob, there are times I'd
like to hear audio from aux window whilst muting main channel ?

Are you saying you are going from composite out on the STB to VGA in on the TV?
Then you're never getting HD right? Coz you can only get HD from that STB using
the component or VGA connections, right?

No,
Component out from the STB to component in on the monitor - called BNC.
Composite out from the dvd/vcr/tuner to composite in on the monitor, called Video-1

composite out from the monitor to aux in (composite) on the STB,
