TWO giant Japanese consumer electronic brands have concluded a deal which
will ensure cheaper plasma televisions for Australian consumers.

In an agreement reportedly worth $498 million, Japan's Pioneer Electronics
has acquired hi-tech heavyweight NEC's plasma display panel division.
Having just signed a memorandum of understanding with NEC, Pioneer chief
executive Kaneo Ito said the finalisation of the agreement between the two
groups would take place by the end of March.

"One of our most important management strategies is to further expand and
develop the plasma display business as a core of Pioneer's businesses," he
said.

Industry insiders said the impulse to acquire the NEC plasma facility was
partly driven by emerging LCD television technology.

Plasma and LCD are locked in a bitter stoush to fill the gap which will be
left in the world market when tubed television production comes to an
end.......

you haven't any antagonisms, the commercials will give you some.

Hard to see the benefit to consumers when competition is reduced in this
manner.

_maybe_ the larger volume for a single company will allow it to reduce
overheads ... but will this be parsed onto the consumer ...?
