Well, I've been watching the progression of the display industry for a few years now and it's good to see 42" plasmas that were $14000 2 years ago, sell for $6000 now. But that's about all that has fallen. Std big crts are still at the same price point and we all know that you can't p/u a top of the line 76cm for less than $3000 and another $600+ for a STB or 86cm for $4500 plus STB.
Everything seems to have bottomed out in price, although they are improving quality at that price.
Now, sorry everyone but although i want the latest and greatest the above are just too expensive and 76cm tvs at < $2000 are featureless and are just not big enough, especially when you watch a 4:3 picture, without a STB.
So why doesn't anyone every talk about the big 80cm Sony (KVAR34M36)?? Yesterday i saw it for $1998. Yes a very very good price.
Sure, it's not widescreen or have the latest mods and cons but damn it's BIG and has a much greater impact than a 76cm widescreen (particularly in 4:3). Sure, the xbox gaems are going to look huge.
Maybe i'm trying to sell myself but will someone convince me that dollar for dollar, the 80cm Sony is not a good buy?
Sorry for the rant.

If you are happy with it and does what you want for a good price, then go
for it.
I guess seeing as you asked the question on aus.tv.digital, the point is you
need ws to appreciate digital.
Most people probably purchased ws to watch dvd's and progressed to stb to
watch tv in ws as it becomes available. (It's not all broadcast in ws as
yet.) Digital tv also gets you better sound options.
In 2008 you will be watching an awful lot of big black stripes running top
and bottom of an 80cm 4:3 tv.

Well,
Last night i took delivery of the 80cm Sony.
No regrets at all. For $1998, it's huge at 4:3 and 74cm diagonally at 16:9 when playing a dvd. 16:9 looks very very good IMHO. The tv actually can output 625i lines so i'm looking forward to getting an STB, which can be run at 4:3 anyway, if i want. So this whole argument about digital and 16:9 doesn't apply since i can choose 4:3 digital.
Honestly, it appears to me that a lot of people are being taken for a ride by purchasing expensive 76cm screens (My opinion at this stage. It may change in 4 years time). The viewable are is really not that large and the whole digital push could very well be considered marketing hype from media and maufacturers.
Hope i haven't upset anyone?

Look, widescreens are wider, different and newer (Oooooohhhhhhhhhhhh) so
they should cost a lot more. That's why everyone forks out for them!
