i'm having problems recording to my vcr. There is no problem at all in
viewing the channels through the VCR, but when I record I have problems with
the colours - it flickers between colour and B&W.
Now, I have the video connected to the STB with standard composite
connection, and the connection to the TV is via RF (because i've run out of
inputs to the TV).
Could the problem lie in the fact that I am using RF, or could it be
something else?

The flickering and all that sounds like what you get when macrovision is
active, but
dont think that should be an issue for digital tv as there is none (as far
as I know) on it.
Can you try unplugging one of your inputs on the tv and change the signal
out from the video from rf to an RCA input , see if
you get same problem?
Also I know you can get rf modulators that are often used to plug dvd
players into the old tellys that only
have rf input, they go for around $40 so maybe give that a go too as last
resort..

All else fails maybe take the STB back and get a replacement..
