I can tell you as I am a technical manager for Athens Olympics that the
originating signals will be 16:9 SDI with upto 8 channels of embedded audio
from each venue.

Also it is 625 PAL origin

However, it will depend upon each country's demand as to what each country
receives from International Broadcast Centre in Athens come games time.

My job is to get the best signal to IBC then it no longer my problem

Yep.

Do you know if there is any truth to the rumour that the IOC have mandated
HD for future Olympics? I hear Turin (the next Winter event) may be
1080/50? I presume Athens is 576/50i 16:9 rather than 1080/50i
downconverted to

Do you mean "PAL" or 625 (aka 576 active) component?

I sincerely hope there is no trace of PAL subcarrier anywhere near it...

So the signal is 16:9 625 around the IBC. Is the audio stereo?
