Just how many lines does analogue tv broadcast anyway? Are all the channels the same?

Analogue PAL is 625 horizontal lines (576 picture and the rest is the black
line). That is why DVD is 576 lines.

Yes but how many lines does analogue transmitt at? 576? That couldn't be the figure. Why go digital then?

Because generaly digital is a lot better quality then analog as analog is
susceptible to noise.

If you had perfect analog reception (practicaly impossiable!) it would be
better then digital SD as it dosn't have to be mpeg encoded (therefore
missing out on geting comrressition artifacts etc...).

Of course *if* the TV station is using digital through out and are not
transcoding (converting between one digital format to another), then the
digital pic will be the same as the analog picture.
